The diamond Leopards were rained out twice last week as the season tried to get started.

With last Monday’s game against Johnson scrubbed the Banks County boys looked to get the bats swinging in Commerce in a double header with the Tigers and Westside Macon.

Netters set for start of region play

Banks County’s Leopards’ tennis team have three matches under their belts so far and are 2-1 as the boys prepare for this week, before the battle for sub-region dominance begins.

With rain delays hindering practices and expected to delay today’s (Wednesday) practice as well, coach Mike Ruth said that Thursday’s match is the first real test as Banks County takes on Rabun County on the road. The match starts at 4 p.m.

“I feel we can compete with these sub-region teams,” Ruth said. “With Rabun, Dawson, Fannin and East Hall all playing in the sub-region, it will be competitive. But, if we can get some more practice time I think we will be competitive with them.” [Full Story »] 

Track Leopards pushing ahead

With two of the first three meets canceled for the Banks County track team, the Leopards are still getting through the planning stages of the season as the team prepares for tough competition.

“We are pushing through the early, and cold, part of the season and preparing for the main part of the track schedule,” coach Paul Hoch said. “We are once again a young team with freshmen making up just over half of the spots on the roster.”

While freshmen hold several key events, it is the well known names that are expected to pace the teams. [Full Story »]

Banks County’s Lady Leopards’ tennis team started off the season in a big way and already are 3-0.

The lady netters look to continue their early streak with a strong appearance this week on the road at Elbert County. Banks County takes on Elbert Thursday at 4 p.m. Next week, Banks County stays on the road, heading to Towns County Monday, March 7, looking for a repeat win over the Indians. Monday’s match is scheduled for 4 p.m.

“I am very excited about the rest of our season,” said head coach Lisa Thomas. “The girls are working hard and have promised this to be one of the best seasons yet. I am very confident of their ability and am looking forward to what's to come.” [Full Story »]

Banks County’s soccer teams matches for this week were cut a little short as heavy rains and storms forced the cancellation of Monday’s first game of the Lumpkin County tourney.

The Leopards were scheduled to play Lumpkin County in the first game of the tourney Feb. 28.

At press time, it was unclear if that game would be made up later, or not.

Ahead for the soccer teams, Banks County plays the second match of the tourney, today (Wednesday) against Rabun County, then the third game of the tournament on Friday against Lakeview Academy. Game times for both matches begin at 5 p.m. with the Lady Leopards, followed by the boys at 7 p.m.

Next week, March 8, the soccer teams begin region play in an on the road match with Dawson County. Girls start at 5 p.m. followed by the Leopards.

The next home match for Banks County will be Thursday, March 10 as the teams host Fannin County in another region meet-up. The boys will start things off at 5 p.m. with the Lady Leopards to follow.

Boys’ soccer teams improves to 1-1

Warmer weather can’t get here soon enough for the Banks County soccer teams, who returned to the field last week despite chilly winds. The Leopards and Lady Leopards faced East Jackson Tuesday followed by Oglethorpe County Thursday.

The boys are off to decent start, 1-1 after falling to the Eagles 4-1 on the road then adding a win at home over the Patriots. Francisco Padron and Koewy Heu started Banks County off in the first period with a goal each.

Leading 2-0 at the break, the Leopards held off the Patriots over the next 45 minutes adding another goal to match Oglethorpe’s lone goal to secure the 3-1 victory. [Full Story »] 

Mat Leopards place three at state BCHS set for State Duals on Fri.

It was a tie for 14th for the mat Leopards at last week’s traditional state tournament. with three placers Banks County earned 38 points, tie with Buford.

No surprise were in store as Jefferson secured an 11th consecutive state title, and the team’s third class AA state title, with 196.5 points. The mat Dragons edged out runner-up Sonoraville, with 177 points and third place finisher Toombs County at 84.5.

Other local AA team, Jackson County earned 11th with 63.5 points just ahead of North Oconee with 63.

Bringing home three state placers from the traditional tournament, Banks County now focuses on earning a high state finish at the state duals this weekend. The state duals were postponed due to inclement winter weather in January. [Full Story »] 

BC boys smack down Panthers

The Banks County boys played the first round of the postseason Tuesday night and it was a refreshing change from the end of the regular season for the Leopards.
Tuesday night the Leopards took on Jackson County in the opening of the 8-AA region tournament. Banks County handily earned the win, 64-51 over Jackson County.

Jackson County entered as the fourth seed on 8-AA South while fifth seed Banks County represented the northside. The Leopards 13 point margin victory sends the boys into Thursday’s game taking on the top seeded East Hall. Banks County takes on the Vikings, Thursday at 7 p.m. in Hart County. The winner of that game advances to the semi-finals at Rabun County on Friday to face the winner of Elbert County versus North Oconee.

Leading into the region tournament the end of the regular season was a bleak mess for the Leopards as the boys dropped the season closer on the road to Dawson County.

Struggling throughout the first half, Banks County was barely hanging on at the half, 5-29. The Leopards did start to string a few together with Seth McEntire dropping in 10 points during the game. Banks County scored 33 in the second half, but the 24 point lead proved to be to big for the Leopards to cut down in the second half. Dawson County took the victory, 59-38.

Now with the regular season behind them and the region tournament hitting full gear tomorrow, the Leopards still have a shot burn up the hardwood and earn a shot at making it into the state tournament.

Grapplers send six looking for AA state titles

Over the weekend at the class AA east sectionals, the Banks County mat Leopards qualified the most grapplers for the state tournament since the sectional format was established.

Banks County pushes six wrestlers forward to the Gwinnett Arena for the state tournament this weekend, only dropping two of the eight that qualified for sectionals.

“We had a few let downs,” coach Kasey Hanley said. “We still qualified six. The guys saw some of the people they have beaten, knock off some kids who were picked to win state.” [Full Story »] 

Armstrong resigns as AD/head coach

Banks County High School Athletic Director and head football coach Blair Armstrong has tendered his letter of resignation effective as of March 10.

Armstrong, who came to Banks County in 2007, led the football team in breaking a decade long playoff drought with the successful 2008 campaign and then completed the most recent season, 7-3, the highest win-loss record since 1997.

Armstrong will leave Banks County to take a position as the head football coach at North Forsyth High School replacing Jared Zito. North Forsyth is a Region 6, 5A school and was coached by Zito since 2007. The North Forsyth Raiders went 5-6 last season.
