The past few weeks have been exteremely busy for the Apalachee High School volleyball team.

Coach Joey Alfonso’s Lady Wildcats have played several matches but have also emerged with a 4-1 subregion record going into this week. AHS was 14-12 overall.

“We had 20 matches in the last two weeks, which is over half of our schedule,” Alfonso said. “We signed up for several events to get experience. This weekend the girls were tired and worn down but we played hard. Things will slow down a bit now. Hopefully, we will be able to get some good practices in. I feel good about where we are but we still have things we need to work on.” [Full Story »] 

Apalachee High School coach Shane Davis doesn’t like the fact his team is not playing this Friday.

He especially doesn’t like it since the Wildcats were defeated in their season opener last week at Habersham Central. [Full Story »] 

The Apalachee High School football team had plenty of offense Friday night but fell in its 2011 debut to Habersham Central on the road.

The Wildcats dropped a 38-35 offensive shootout which was not decided until the final minute. AHS (0-1 overall, 0-1 in Region 8-AAAA) now has its bye week before hosting Flowery Branch Sept. 9.

Playing away from home was not a kind thing for the Apalachee High School football team in 2010.

While the Wildcats were undefeated at home, the team was 1-4 on the road. Perhaps the toughest setup was an upset loss to Cedar Shoals which would help prevent AHS from returning to the postseason. A new season arrives Friday and for the Wildcats and head coach Shane Davis, the longest regular season road trip is on tap. AHS travels to Habersham Central High School as the 2011 and Region 8-AAAA schedule begins.

“We better be ready,” Davis said. “It’s here. It’s one of those things where it seemed we just had several weeks to get ready and now we are under a week. We are to that point where the players are tired of practicing against each other and the coaches are tired of watching the players practice against each other.” [Full Story »] 

Apalachee High School was about as close to victory as you could get Monday.

In the end, Archer High School rallied for a 5-4 win.

The Lady Wildcats led 4-3 going into the seventh inning but some hits by Archer along with a misplayed ball in the outfield would prove costly for AHS. [Full Story »] 

Thursday’s preseason scrimmage will bring a needed change of pace for the Apalachee High School football team.

The Wildcats, who host Archer Thursday at 7 p.m., have been involved in preseason work for some time and coach Shane Davis said the presence of another team will generate some spark. [Full Story »] 

Believe it or not, the recruiting process seems to be over for Stanley Williams.

The Apalachee High School rising sophomore has verbally committed to the University of Georgia after he was extended an offer last week following Dawg Night activities in Athens.
Williams, who will not graduate high school until 2014, impressed UGA coaches with his speed, running a 4.28. UGA coaches reportedly did not ask Williams to run again after he turned in that time.

“This is really nice for him,” said AHS coach Shane Davis. “He’s the youngest player since I’ve been coaching to receive an offer.” [Full Story »] 

Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis doesn’t make changes to his coaching staff often but a recent addition has the makings of benefiting the program in terms of experience.

Davis recently announced the hiring of former Lakeside DeKalb High School head coach Thomas Cox to the Wildcat staff.

Just like their athletic counterparts at Apalachee High School, the 2011-2012 Cheer Cats have been busy this summer.

Recently the team attended a camp at the University of Alabama, allowing the athletes to receive college-level instruction which coach Haley McDonald believes will prove beneficial in coming weeks. [Full Story »]
