Wildcats notch first win of season

Apalachee High School became the first Barrow County team to win a game this season on Friday when the Wildcats pounded Madison County High School 45-9.

“It’s just a struggle,” said AHS coach Shane Davis. “We’re in a position we haven’t been in a long time. But what I’ll tell the kids is that we’re in a position we haven’t been in a while, we’re 1-0, and we’re going to try to get to 2-0.”

The Wildcats broke loose offensively Friday with five offensive touchdowns. Three of them came from sophomore Stanley Williams, another from junior Zay Henry and the last came late in the game from sophomore Jody Mathis. [Full Story »]

The Apalachee High School coaching staff has been working overtime this week in an effort to be prepared for Friday’s opponent.

The Madison County Red Raiders — probably more so than any team in 8-AAAA — will use a variety of offensive formations, many times changing directions during a game. That causes long hours of film study for opposing coaching, AHS included.

“They always seem to put quality skill players on the field,” said Wildcat coach Shane Davis. “Coach (Randall) Owens always does a good job with them. In the first two games this year they used a traditional Wing-T offense. They have since used the spread, a two tight end set and some ‘Wildcat’ formations. You have to be prepared for a lot and even be ready to make adjustments during a game.” [Full Story »]

As the Apalachee High School volleyball team looks to wrap up the 2011 regular season, the Lady Wildcats appear set to be the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AAAA South.

AHS had hoped for a win by Clarke Central over Flowery Branch last week but that did not happen.

“The first place team on our side will likely play Loganville,” said Apalachee coach Joey Alfonso. “The second place team will likely meet Heritage. They beat us once this season and have a 6-3 region record. That makes it a tough road. The top five or six teams in the region are pretty even and then it drops off some after that.” [Full Story »]

The Apalachee High School football team pushed Heritage to the limit, but ended up falling 22-17 in Conyers Friday night.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 0-4 in Region 8-AAAA and all but ends their playoff chances for 2011. The Heritage Patriots remain undefeated this season.

AHS will return home next Friday to host Madison County High School in another Region 8-AAAA contest.

Shane Davis has been in the coaching profession long enough to know that almost all programs have to endure some bumps in the road. It’s just the nature of the business.

Yet, Davis is actually facing it for the first time as a head coach and the coach said earlier this week he only had to go through it once as an assistant. Still, it doesn’t make it any easier.

“It’s not any fun,” Davis said of the Wildcats’ 0-3 start in 2011. “You think about all the hard work the kids put in during the offseason and you hate for them to be going through this. However, we can feel sorry for ourselves or go back to work. There have been a lot of teams in the position we are in now and they were able to bounce back and we can too. We have to remember this feeling and work to make sure we don’t go through it again.” [Full Story »]

FOOTBALL: AHS falls to Salem on road

The Apalachee High School football team fell to 0-3 overall as well as 0-3 in Region 8-AAAA following a 14-7 loss to Salem in Conyers Friday night.

Both teams scored rather quickly in the first quarter and the game appeared to be setting up as an offensive shootout. Instead, a defensive battle emerged with the game remaining deadlocked at 7-7 until the fourth quarter when the Seminoles scored what turned out to be the game winner.

"It doesn't feel any better tonight," AHS coach Shane Davis said. "It's not going to feel any better until we win."

With his team’s playoff hopes perhaps hanging in the balance, Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis will prepare his squad for another test this Friday when the Wildcats venture to Salem High School in Conyers.

AHS (0-2 overall, 0-2 in Region 8-AAAA) is coming off a 42-20 setback to Flowery Branch last week although Davis felt his team put forth a better effort than it did in the opening game against Habersham Central. Now that same effort will be needed against Salem (1-2), who lost in the final minute to Habersham Central last Friday 43-39.

“They are a very athletic team,” Davis said. “They have a couple of running backs who have speed and their fullback is a strong runner. Their quarterback can be dangerous with the ability he’s shown to this point in the season.”

In need of a win, Davis knows this Friday could end his team’s playoff chances without a victory. [Full Story »]

Apalachee High School gave Flowery Branch its toughest challenge to this point in 2011, but the Wildcats still fell 42-20 Friday night at R. Harold Harrison Stadium.

AHS is now 0-2 overall and 0-2 in Region 8-AAAA. The Wildcats will look to get into the win column next Friday when they travel to Salem High School in Conyers.

It’s no secret the Flowery Branch High School football team has a high-powered offense.

However, Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis is almost equally impressed by the defensive unit the Falcons put on the field. The combination of a high-powered offense, a stingy defense and even strong special teams play makes Flowery Branch the favorite at this point in Region 8-AAAA. It’s what has had Davis and his coaching staff putting in plenty of work the past week as the Falcons visit R. Harold Harrison Stadium Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

“There is so much talk about their offense that their defense gets overshadowed,” Davis said. “In reality, they are very strong on the defensive side of the football. Going back to last season, we scored a good bit on them but a lot of that came on big plays. We were able to get our guys in space and to the second and third level of their defense. Traditionally, they don’t let that happen. Their defense fires off the football extremely hard.” [Full Story »]
