Visiting Loganville High School saw all it wanted to see of Saboyce Shelton Tuesday night.

The Apalachee High School senior scored 34 points as the Lady Wildcats improved a program best 6-0 to start the season with a 74-59 victory. Shelton scored 22 points in the second half as AHS simply had too much fire power for the Lady Devils.

“Saboyce is just a very good basketball player,” said coach Michael Parks. “She is a good all-around player. She can score on the blocks or knock down the three-pointer. When she shoots, she’s pretty accurate. I’m always proud of the effort she gives.” [Full Story »] 

A 28-point performance from senior Saboyce Shelton helped the Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats improve their record to 4-0 after a 74-55 road win against Monroe Area Tuesday night.

Shelton helped spark AHS early, scoring 15 points in the first quarter, as the Lady Wildcats are off to their best start in program history. Monroe Area hung around early as there were six lead changes in the first quarter, but Shelton scored her teamís final six points for a 19-11 advantage after the first eight minutes. [Full Story »] 

The Apalachee High School boys basketball has already matched its win total from a season ago.

The Wildcats (1-0) held off visiting East Jackson 61-51 Tuesday night as they ushered in the 2011-2012 season. A 13-point effort from junior Ronald Pettis helped lead the way.

The Georgia High School Association has moved to six classifications and both Winder-Barrow Barrow High School and Apalachee High School will be in the second largest beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.

In a decision announced yesterday, the GHSA reclassification committee announced the new setup.

Current Region 8-AAAA members Clarke Central, Cedar Shoals, Flowery Branch, Loganville, Heritage, Salem are also moving up to AAAAA. Rockdale County will move to AAAAA, the state’s new largest classification while Madison County will continue to be AAAA. Habersham Central will also be in AAAAAA, the new largest classification. There is some unkown at this point as the Apalachee High School coaches and players begin preparations for the 2012 season.

The Georgia High School Association has not yet announced the new classification setup or region alignments for the next two school years. This makes it impossible to prepare schedules or know who opponents might be.

Even with that, AHS coach Shane Davis said his players will simply concentrate on going back to work, primarily in the weight room as they seek a return to the postseason. The Wildcats finished 4-6 this fall, overcoming a 0-4 start to go 4-2 in the final six games. [Full Story »] 

The Apalachee High School football team scored on all of its possessions Friday night against Loganville, putting 42 points on the scoreboard. It did so without one of its top offensive weapons as sophomore Stanley Williams was suspended from the team earlier in the week.

Coach Shane Davis said Williams was “suspended from the game” but did not elaborate further. Williams was not on sidelines Friday night. Reports have now indicated he is no longer a student at AHS.

The offense actually did not miss a beat without Williams, who made a verbal commitment to the University of Georgia during the summer. Zay Henry rushed for 187 yards on 23 carries. Clint Ashe was 9-of-16 through the air for 151 yards. Eric Tanner added 89 yards on 17 attempts.

In the first half, the Wildcats had two scoring drives of 14 yards. A second half drive took 15 plays. All three of these players return next fall.

Even with a different opponent this Friday, the strategy will be mostly the same for the Apalachee High School football team.

The Wildcats host Loganville Friday in a battle of 4-5 teams. Both teams will likely miss the playoffs, regardless of the outcome.

“We will have to have a strong effort and be able to control the clock,” AHS coach Shane Davis said. “It will be key for us to keep their offense off the field as much as possible. Our defense has played well recently. Hopefully, our players have another four quarters in them.” [Full Story »]
