The Commerce High School cross country team concluded its season at the Region 8-A meet with average times, perhaps, but extraordinary experience, seniors on the team said.
Chase Klugh led the team, running consistently throughout the season and leading the Tigers last week at the Athens Christian meet. His time of 22 minutes, 55 seconds outpaced teammate Johnny McAbee, who came in second on his team (22:53).

Commerce fell to George Walton 24-14 on Friday in Monroe.
Turnovers continued to impact the Tigers, who gave up 24 unanswered points after taking a 7-0 lead to open the first quarter.
Commerce (3-6, 2-3) faces a must-win situation next week versus Social Circle to lock up the No. 4 playoff spot in Region 8-A.
The Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1) secured home field advantage in the first round of the state playoffs as the region’s No. 2 seed. Undefeated Prince Avenue claimed the No. 1 seed after its win over Athens Christian. It’s the Wolverines’ first region championship in school history.
Undefeated Prince Avenue solidified its command over Region 8-A with a 35-13 win over Commerce in Bogart last Friday.
However, the Tigers’ loss did not hurt their playoff run. In fact, another team’s unexpected loss actually boosted Commerce’s chances at securing home field advantage in the first round.

Commerce High School’s basketball teams tipped off the season this week with opening rounds of practice.
The boys’ squad, led by coach Chad Bridges, worked out on Monday, with 17 junior varsity and varsity players arriving at the gymnasium. Another six or seven players are expected to join the
team after the Tigers’ football season ends.

Commerce suffered its first Region 8-A loss last week to Athens Academy in Tiger Stadium.
The final score, 21-10, stung, coach Marvin Justice said, but it doesn’t change the bottom line. Commerce still can reconcile its own playoff picture, starting Friday. The Tigers (3-4, 2-1) face undefeated Prince Avenue Christian (7-0, 5-0) in Bogart at 7:30 p.m.

Commerce Cheer Tigers won first place in its class at a meet held Saturday at Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee. The Tigers scored 28 more points than its nearest competitor, Social Circle.

Athens Academy capitalized on two Commerce turnovers in the third quarter to secure a critical Region 8-A win.
The Spartans outscored the Tigers 21-10 despite the teams' near even offensive yardage.
Quarterback Cody Streetman, who twice left the game because of injury, scored Commerce's lone touchdown on a 1-yard run that made the score 12-7 by halftime.
Josh Swistak added a field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Commerce's only score of the second half.
Commerce (3-4, 2-1) travels to Prince Avenue (7-0, 3-0) next week.
Coach Marvin Justice said he started thinking about Athens Academy by halftime of his Tigers’ 42-0 rout over Riverside Military Academy last week.
Continuity is what makes the Spartans dangerous, the Commerce coach said, with veteran coach Michael Gunn having led the team for more than 20 years.
