Commerce’s boys’ and’ girls track teams may have the week off from competition, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be taking it easy.

With a relatively clear weather forecast, coaches Pam Canup and Kendall Love expect to get in a lot of practice for the coming meets.

The Commerce diamond Tigers hope the first five games of the season are not indicative of the rest of the baseball season.

Five games into the 2010 baseball season Commerce is still scratching for a win as Jefferson blanked the team on Saturday, 4-0 on the back of a two-run loss to Franklin last Wednesday, 13-11.

“Jefferson is a good team, but I think if we will start playing like we are capable we can be a good team,” said Tiger head coach Steve Cotrell. “Right now, the goal is to find a way to win one and see what happens.”

Monday, the Tigers hosted Lumpkin County for the team’s fifth loss, 14-2. [Full Story »] 

In a strong showing last weekend, the Commerce Lady Tigers’ track team beat out host East Jackson as well as local competition Jackson and Banks counties at the Eagle Invitational.

The girls brought home the fourth-place trophy with 40 points, just ahead of host East Jackson’s 38 points. Dawson County took the meet championship with 112.5 points followed by Habersham (106) and Oglethorpe (71).

Other teams attending the meet were Rabun (37.5), Jackson County (37) and Banks County (23). [Full Story »] 

A region championship, a historic win over Jefferson, a 23-8 season and an elite eight finish — not bad for the Commerce boys’ basketball team this season.

The boys’ fairy tale season ended last Saturday against Whitefield Academy. Commerce advanced into the quarterfinal round of the Class A state playoffs, but was halted 86-38 by the Wolfpack.

“We did not finish the way we wanted but I am very proud of what this team was able to accomplish. Our final record was 23-8, region champs and finish in the Elite 8,” said coach Chad Bridges, adding that the team will look back on this season with some good memories. [Full Story »] 

There are a couple of new teams waiting to face the Black and Gold gridiron Tigers in the 2010 season, but none have coach Steve Savage particularly worried.

With Jefferson firmly seated as the season opener, Aug. 27, the next round of the River War is locked in, but the rest of the schedule has seen some changes.

Commerce will face opponents the Tigers have not seen in a several years as well as a couple of newcomers to the region. [Full Story »] 

With two losses under their belts and a whole season in front of them, the Commerce baseball Tigers are still looking for the big finish.

The Tigers rescheduled Tuesday’s Franklin County away game due to the snow. Commerce will now host the Franklin Lions today (Wednesday) at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Commerce's Tigers have been called a scrappy team team on the court, and they proved it moments ago as they defeated St. Francis in the final seconds of the round two playoff game.

The Tigers advance to play the winner of Whitefield Academy versus Paideia at Marietta High School this Friday after a 52-48 victory in the second round.

Update:The Commerce Tigers will play Whitefield Academy on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Marietta High School.

Tyler Gamble started the final nail in St. Francis' coffin hitting free throws to extend a narrow one point lead.

The second round of the state class A playoffs pits Commerce against 7A second seed St. Francis.

That game was scheduled for Tuesday night, but was postponed until Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at CHS because of the snow.

Also delayed until tomorrow is the Commerce baseball game against Franklin. The Diamond Tigers will host Franklin Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
