Column: Leopards claw their way back into contention

If you had any doubts as to what this year’s Banks County High School football team is made of, you shouldn’t worry any more.
After starting the season 0-2, the Leopards have climbed their way back to .500 overall and more importantly sit at 2-1 in Region 8-AA.

Back-to-back region wins against Dawson County and Rabun County have BCHS looking at a very important home game against North Oconee this Friday. This will be as important a regular season game as a Leopard football team has played in some time.

You can’t help but admire the grit and determination of this team. BCHS ventured to Rabun County last week and recorded a 35-6 victory at a place where it is never easy to win. However, this team was not going to be denied.

It’s almost another Friday night and everyone in Northeast Georgia knows what that means: it is time for some football.

Jackson County gets back on the field this week after an off week to face Prince Avenue.

The Panthers have been a team that I think has surprised a lot of people in only two games. Honestly I don’t think anyone expected the Panthers to win against Sonoraville, but the fight Jackson County put up and to only lose by two points shows that coach Kirk has turned the ship around for JCCHS’s football program. After an admittedly frustrating first two weeks of the season, the Banks County High School football team got the train moving in the right direction last Friday night.

Coach Blair Armstrong’s Leopards recorded their first victory of the 2008 season with a 48-27 win against visiting Dawson County. The victory was important not only because it was the first of the still relatively young campaign but because it evened the Region 8-AA record for BCHS at 1-1. Things certainly look a lot rosier when your region mark is 1-1 rather than 0-2. [Full Story »]

Back on August 9, I was fortunate enough to be present at a timeless event.

That’s when the inaugural Lakewood Speedway Family Reunion was held at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, located at the Dawsonville City Municipal Complex.

An estimated 400 or so former racers, fans and family members came out to tell stories, shake hands and remember one of the grandest speedways in history, which was located just south of Atlanta.

The obvious common link between Josh and Joe Lord is they are brothers. To be more precise, they are twins.

They share a love of sports and a love of coaching. It makes them a strong team. When it comes to fast-pitch softball and baseball at Banks County High School, they have become the faces of the sports and have helped build their respective programs into winners.

I remember three years ago meeting them for the first time. To be honest, I couldn’t tell them apart at the time and while I believe I can now, I still look twice to be sure I now which one I am talking to. (A quick look at a jersey number also helps). [Full Story »]

For those of you with an impatient nature, (I count myself as one of those) I’m sure you wondered if this week would ever arrive.

Well, it has. The Banks County High School football team will take to the field this Friday night for a game that counts in the standings. It’s here folks. It’s time to put the football on the kicking tee and see what happens.

After weeks, months even, of offseason work by coach Blair Armstrong’s team, it all begins for real this Friday night. The Leopards will venture to Washington-Wilkes to see what the early stages of the 2008 campaign has in store. [Full Story »]

Welcome sports fans to a brand new season of watching young men beat the snot out each other, and we have football!
Yes, it is the beginning of another year of high school football.

All kidding aside, I am glad it is football season because it means that the fans are coming.
I know a lot of people get worked up for their team of choice every year and I do not have a problem with that. In fact, I wish more people could come out and support the local teams, but that is not the point of this particular column.

I recently had a chance to catch up with a friend of mine who is “not from around these parts” as some would say, and as I explained that I am covering high school sports for a community newspaper, my friend said something that made a lot of sense.

Traditional race fans got a pleasant surprise last Thursday morning when the announcement was made that the Southern 500 would be returning to the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule, in name at least, at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina in 2009.

The Southern 500 was one of the races that helped build NASCAR into what it is today. But a desire to cash in on a supposed goldmine of fans in California (that has since failed to materialize) saw Darlington’s traditional date go to the California Speedway in 2003. The Southern 500 event itself, after a one-year run in November, was done away with in 2005.

Community support vital for success

It’s common sense when you think about it.
High school athletic programs must have community support to thrive and be successful. Think about it, you don’t see too many winning programs without it. Come to think about it, you don’t see any that I know of.

That’s why the scene at the Banks County High School football stadium last Friday night — for a preseason scrimmage no less — was so great to see. As the start of the scrimmage against Johnson High School arrived, the crowd on the home side of the stadium was indeed a sight to behold.

One long-time Leopard fan said there have been plenty of regular season games where the stands were not as full. It was great to see the support and enthusiasm of those who took the time to come to support the players and coaches. After the work they have put in during the offseason they certainly deserve it.
