The Georgia State University football team was in need of a win, any win, in a big way.
Winder-Barrow High School graduate Chandon Sullivan helped the Panthers get it with a 34-32 road victory against New Mexico State Saturday. Sullivan finished with five tackles, a sack, another tackle for loss and two pass breakups in the win over New Mexico State.
Sullivan played in every game for GSU in the 2014 season and to this point in 2015.
Brady House of Winder is currently making baseball memories which will stay with him the rest of his life.
House was recently selected for the USA Baseball 12-and-under team which will travel to Taiwan in an attempt to defend a 2013 gold medal in the WBSC World Cup. The team will open play Friday, July 24, against Nicaragua. Just making the team has been an accomplishment for House, the son of Michael and Dana House. He survived several tryouts which began with more than 100 players.
House traveled to California for practice sessions where he was named to the team. Scrimmage games followed before embarking overseas to play in the Baseball World Cup.
The event has become a family affair for the young player who has been accompanied by his mom and grandmother on the trip to the West Coast. House is the grandson of Sammy and Marshia Hunter of Winder. A rising seventh grader, House is the lone player selected from Georgia for the 18-player roster. The tournament continues through Aug. 2.
Dizzy Dean baseball and softball all-star play is in full swing, with several local teams making deep tournament runs. Three teams have won district titles, while one team - Jackson County's 10U softball all-stars - finished as runners-up at state. Two other teams - the Jefferson 10-year-old baseball all-stars and the 12-year-old Jackson County baseball all-stars - will play for district titles tonight (Wednesday).
