Hoschton teen has Olympic dreams

In about seven years, one local teenager is hoping to give Jackson County residents a special reason to watch the Olympic games.

Cannie Ash, a home schooled 18-year-old from Hoschton, is focused on making her way onto the U.S. Kayaking team and to the Olympics in 2016.

Ash does flat water kayaking, the type that is done at the Olympics. She recently took part in the USA Canoe/Kayak World Trials held in Chula Vista, California. [Full Story »]

CVB golf tournament a success

The Banks County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) held the 2009 CVB Golf Tournament April 30 at Hammer’s Glen Golf & Country Club in Homer.

“We again received tremendous support from our sponsors, donors, and our members for this year’s tournament,” said CVB president Bonnie Johnson.

The tournament winners were the Windstream team of Neal Brown, Doug Griffin, Eland Jones and Wayne Parker.

Tiger Sharks Start Season June 10

School is out and the weather is turning hot, which means it’s time for the Tiger Sharks to be back in the pool.

The Commerce Tiger Shark recreation swim team kicked off the 2009 season on Memorial Day with a light practice followed by ice cream and cake.

This year the swim team had 75 sign up to participate under eight-year veteran coach Nick Moulton. Moulton along with Pam Minish, the Minnows’ coach, have the largest turnout in the history of the team.

Jefferson Sea Dragons prepare for 2009 season

The Jefferson Park and Rec swim team, the Sea Dragons, are set to get their 2009 summer season kicked off next week, and according to team administrator and assistant coach Chad Klinck, it should be one of the best on record for the program.

Klinck says the team has about 95 kids this year, up from 80 that took part last year.

“(Between) 15-20 of them have started swimming year round now and that really helps the team,” he said. “Two years ago we did not have any year round swimmers. If we had some older swimmers we could probably compete for a league or GRPA state title, but until we get a high school team we will continue to lose swimmers to other sports.” [Full Story »] 

Area athletes take honors at state meet

Several local youths brought home awards from the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) state track meet May 8 in Carrollton.

Jackson County’s Parks and Recreation program, which restarted following a 12-year hiatus, had numerous top ten finishes including two first place victories.

Additionally, Jefferson Park and Recreation had several competitors place in the meet with a handful of top five wins. [Full Story »] 

Special Olympics slated for May 8

Athletes from all over Jackson County will be participating in local games for the Special Olympics on Friday, May 8 at the JCCHS stadium.

The opening ceremony will be held at 10:15 a.m. with the awards ceremony to be held around 1 p.m.

Over 100 athletes will compete in games such as the 100-meter dash, softball throw, shot put and wheelchair races. [Full Story »] 

Banks County: Golf tourney has decent turnout despite weather

The April 1 golf tournament sponsored by the Banks County All Sports Booster Club was a soggy affair.

Earlier rains forced the carts to remain off the grass and provided the golfers with exercise as the Lauderdale style tournament got under way.

Winning first place was the Southern Concrete team of Dwight Standridge, Keith Gowder, Gene Ivey and Jason Lord.

Second place was the First Georgia Bank team and third place went to the Yearwood Plumping team.

In individual contests, the closest to the pin on hole 17 was Gary Watkins. While the longest drive on hole 7 came from Dwight Standridge.

Youth hockey player to travel to Sweden

Drew Kitchens, a seventh grade student at Winder's Russell Middle School, plays ice hockey for the Junior Thrashers travel team based in Duluth.

His coach, K.J. Voorhees, a professional hockey player, selected the players to compete in a tournament in Sweden. Kitchens is one of two players from Georgia selected for the trip and just one of 11 from the United States. The players are ages 13-14. [Full Story »] 

CMS Track Tigers Win At Eagle Invitational

The track Tigers of Commerce Middle School continued their season with impressive performances at the Junior Eagle Invitational last Saturday at East Jackson Comprehensive High School.

Out of 12 teams, the Tiger boys earned a second-place finish. The girls placed tenth.

Commerce had three boys with first-place finishes and one girls’ first place.

Micah Eason placed first in the shot put with a 40’1” toss, while Michaela Rucker won the girls’ shot put with a distance of 29’3”. [Full Story »]
