Shelton leads Lady Cats in tourney opener

The Apalachee High School girls basketball team opened play in the Peach State Holiday Invitational Tuesday with a 66-51 victory against Jordan High School of North Carolina.

Saboyce Shelton scored 29 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Wildcats, who improved to 7-2 for the season. Ryan Burke added eight points and 11 rebounds while Jasmine Bell finished with 13 points. [Full Story »]

It’s hard to believe another year has slipped by.

Within a few days 2011 will be in the rear-view mirror. It seems like only yesterday we were ringing in the new year with plenty of hopes and dreams. Now it’s all but behind us as we look to what 2012 will bring.

The Apalachee High School Wildcats had just dropped a contest to Archer High School the day before by 24 points, but coach Kevin Morris has always been one to see the larger picture.

AHS, which is coming off a one-win season a year ago, is making strides during the first half of the 2011-2012 campaign. The Wildcats have already posted two victories and have knocked on the door in several other contests. It was a familiar story for the Apalachee High School wrestling team Saturday.

The Mat Wildcats competed at the Madison County Duals and emerged with a sixth-place finish against some quality opponents. AHS opened the weekend with a match against Commerce, a team Wildcat coach Jim Stoudenmire has a high level of praise for.

“Commerce is tough in a lot of spots,” the AHS coach said. “What makes the matchup tough is their strengths are at spots where our strengths are. We also had a few wrestlers out of town for the holidays.” [Full Story »]

Dear Santa,

As we approach your busiest day of the year, I hope you may have time to read my “letter” and help deliver some sports-related gifts.

I know the miracle of technology allows for information to reach you at the North Pole faster these days so I’m sure you will have time to scan this, even though Christmas is just four days away.

The Winder-Barrow High School swim program experienced plenty of success last week at a five-team event at the Steve Lunquist Aquatic Center in Jonesboro.

The WBHS boys had eight first-place finishes while the Lady Swim Doggs earned six.

“All in all, the meet was great and the kids left with a lot of confidence toward their abilities,” said coach Jennifer Blevins.

Mitchell Buttler, Quinn McDaniels, Alex Hentenaar and Jake Hester led WBHS in the 200-meter medley relay, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay. WBHS won each of these events. [Full Story »]

AHS football players named All-Region

Apalachee High School’s Rakim Peters was named first team All-Region for the 2010 football season.

Teammates Zay Henry, Sacorous Riley and Johnny Thompson were named to the second team for Region 8-AAAA while Wildcat Jermaine Smith was named honorable mention.

Winder-Barrow High School junior Austin Stewart was named second team All-Region while freshman kicker Colin Shannon was honorable mention All-Region.

The winning streak moved to six games for the Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs Saturday after dispatching of rival Monroe Area.

In the 51-38 victory, WBHS, who improved to 6-1, was led by Delorean Itabiyi, who scored a game-high 17 points. Jasmine Maske added 16 points and was 9-of-10 from the foul line. Brittany Hixson, the team’s other senior, added nine points. [Full Story »]

Visiting Loganville High School saw all it wanted to see of Saboyce Shelton Tuesday night.

The Apalachee High School senior scored 34 points as the Lady Wildcats improved a program best 6-0 to start the season with a 74-59 victory. Shelton scored 22 points in the second half as AHS simply had too much fire power for the Lady Devils.

“Saboyce is just a very good basketball player,” said coach Michael Parks. “She is a good all-around player. She can score on the blocks or knock down the three-pointer. When she shoots, she’s pretty accurate. I’m always proud of the effort she gives.” [Full Story »]

The Army-Navy football game is must see for me each year.

You can keep the broken system that college football uses to determine a national champion. You can keep your setup where certain teams are denied a chance to play for a national title. You can take your millions upon millions of dollars that schools make off the backs of their football players and put it, well, you know where you can stick it.
Rivalries come in all shapes and forms. Yes, the Alabama-Auburn rivalry is heated and full of hate. The Georgia-Georgia Tech game is fun for me as I have friends on both sides of the issue and they really go after one another each fall when the game arrives. [Full Story »]
