WBHS coach looks to offseason program

When Ben Corley breaks down the 2008 football season for his Winder-Barrow High School Bulldoggs, the coach sees one thing clear.

“Overall, we got better from the start to the finish,” Corley said. “We had a great deal of improvement. We were better at the end of the season than we were at the beginning and that was a positive.”

Apalachee falls in first round of state

Playing a long way from home, the Apalachee High School football team dropped a tough 16-8 contest to Rome in the opening-round of the Class AAAA state football playoffs Friday night.

The Wildcats trailed 16-0 at halftime but cut the Wolves' lead to one score in the second half. Apalachee had chances perhaps tie the contest but could not cross the Rome goal line again.

Admittedly, few people probably expected the Winder-Barrow High School football team to put up much of a fight Friday night when the Loganville Red Devils paid a visit to W. Clair Harris Stadium.

Afterall, the Red Devils were set to clinch the Region 8-AAAA title while the host Bulldoggs were entering the game 1-8 and, in theory, had little to play for except for pride. Someone forgot to tell coach Ben Corley’s squad, however, that they were simply supposed to roll over and play dead.

Bulldoggs play region champs tough

The Loganville High School football team won the Region 8-AAAA title Friday night at W. Clair Harris Stadium, but the Winder-Barrow Bulldoggs made them earn it.

The visiting Red Devils took a 19-7 win in a steady rain which moved into the area before kickoff and fell throughout the contest. The rain hampered both teams offensively, but the defense shined for both squads.

For the Apalachee High School football team, two words sum it all up: “playoff time.”

The Wildcats are still practicing this week after week 10 of the regular season. It’s the goal of every high school football team in the state. For the third consecutive season, coach Shane Davis’ team is among this elite group.

The Apalachee High School football team is once again preparing for the state playoffs following Week 10 of the regular season.

Coach Shane Davis' team defeated Salem 23-7 in Conyers last week and will meet Rome on the road Friday in the opening-round of the Class AAAA state playoffs this Friday night.

The Winder-Barrow High School football team will doing more than simply playing out the string Friday night.

The Bulldoggs played well overall against Loganville High School before falling 19-7 in a game playing in a steady rain at W. Clair Harris Stadium. Coach Ben Corley and his coaching staff will now begin work toward next season.

While last week’s victory against Madison County was important, it did not guarantee Apalachee High School a ticket to the Class AAAA state playoffs.

'Doggs can still play role of spoiler

The Winder-Barrow High School football team will not be going to the postseason this fall but the Bulldoggs are in perfect position to play the role of spoiler this Friday night.

In fact, head coach Ben Corley said his team is taking the approach that the game with Loganville is the region championship for Winder-Barrow. The visiting Red Devils will have plenty on the line as they look to clinch the No. 1 seed for the state playoffs.
