Wildcats defeat Cedar Shoals

The Apalachee High School football team has gotten hot at a critical time.

The Wildats notched their third Region 8-AAAA victory defeating Cedar Shoals 28-13 on Homecoming. The win keeps Apalachee’s playoff hopes alive, although the Wildcats will need some help to claim the No. 4 seed.

“During the last five weeks, I am extremely proud of how we have fought,” AHS coach Shane Davis said. “We are 3-1 in our last four games and we are playing extremely hard. Even going back to the Heritage game, we had a chance to win.” [Full Story »]

This week’s opponent for Winder-Barrow High School has been somewhat hot and cold during 2011.

The Salem High School Seminoles have some big wins but also some onesided losses. Still, WBHS coach David Wagner knows his team is facing an opponent with plenty of capability this week on the road. [Full Story »]

The playoffs are now out of reach for the Apalachee High School football team for 2011. The Wildcats will now have to play for pride.

Ironically, based on how well the team has performed in the past few seasons, it’s something AHS should be uniquely qualified to do.

The Wildcats host Cedar Shoals Friday for Homecoming and will look to close out the final three games of 2011 season on a strong note. AHS coach Shane Davis said he believes his players will have the right mental attitude for the contest. [Full Story »]

Lady Wildcats fall in first round of state

There were plenty of question marks going into the 2011 volleyball season for the Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats.

When all was said and done, AHS had finished second at the Region 8-AAAA tournament and returned to state for the second year in a row. For coach Joey Alfonso, it was simply another step down the road of building a successful program.

AHS fell in the opening round of state last week to Starr’s Mill 25-13, 25-19, 25-19, a victim of a bad draw as much as anything. Still, Alfonso knows the loss does not take away from what his team was able to accomplish in what was considered a rebuilding one in many ways. [Full Story »]

WBHS runners excel at own invitational

On an almost picturesque morning, the Winder-Barrow High School cross country teams hosted their own invitational Saturday. With several quality programs competing on the course at Bramlett Elementary School, the WBHS teams held their own and turned in more solid performances as the upcoming Region 8-AAAA meet draws into view.

“I was pleased with the whole day,” said WBHS boys coach Michael Lofton. “The meet went well. We were on schedule the whole time. I was pleased with the number of teams we had and by the level of the runners. I was also happy with our performances. Those who ran, ran very well.”

The WBHS Lady Bulldoggs were second behind Landmark Christian. The two schools ran away from the field as Landmark had 38 points followed by the Lady Bulldoggs with 40. Druid Hills was a distant third with 94.

Wildcats battle but fall to Clarke Central

The Apalachee High School football team played perhaps its best game of 2011 but fell to visiting Clarke Central 37-28 at R. Harold Harrison Stadium Friday night.

The Wildcats (2-5 overall and in Region 8-AAAA) led 22-19 at halftime but could not find the answer to stop the Gladiator offense in the second half. The loss all but ends Apalachee's playoff chances for the season.

WBHS hosts Loganville for Homecoming

After his team turned in perhaps the best defensive performance of the last two seasons against Heritage last week, David Wagner hopes his team can continue to improve in all areas this Friday when Loganville visits W. Clair Harris Stadium.

The Winder-Barrow High School football team held undefeated Heritage to 21 points last Friday in a 21-0 setback. Wagner knows, however, the road doesn’t get much smoother this week.

“Loganville has a very athletic quarterback who throws and runs well,” Wagner said. “He is the catalyst for their offense. They are solid at the skill positions. I believe they are better than their record indicates. They are just another solid team in our region.”

The fortunes have turned in the last couple of weeks for the Apalachee High School football team.

However, Wildcat head coach Shane Davis knows a mountain of a challenge awaits this Friday.

AHS will host Clarke Central Friday at 7:30 p.m. as the Wildcats look to keep their postseason hopes alive against the defending Region 8-AAAA champion. [Full Story »]

Volley Cats begin quest for state title

Saturday was a marathon for the Apalachee High School volleyball team.

After five matches, 13 games and seven and a half hours, the Lady Wildcats emerged as the Region 8-AAAA runner up. All in all, quite an accomplishment for the team and program, led by coach Joey Alfonso.

“The day started off rough because our bus was late and we were late getting there (to Habersham Central),” Alfonso said. “We were dragging and it took us some time to get going.” [Full Story »]

The Winder-Barrow High School cross country athletes took advantage of what was termed a “fast course” Saturday resulting in top 10 finishes.

The ASICS Invitational in Whitesburg saw the WBHS varsity boys place sixth overall (average time 17:08) in the Championship Division. The Lady Bulldoggs were eighth overall with an average time of 20:09.

“It was a great weekend,” said WBHS boys coach Michael Lofton. “There were perfect weather conditions and we couldn’t have asked for a better course. Our boys really stepped up and our top seven were all under 18 minutes.” [Full Story »]
