For Monty McClure, the transition has been a smooth one.

The new Winder-Barrow High School softball coach has been impressed with his players and the level of support he has received since being promoted from an assistant for the Lady Doggs. McClure takes over control of the program from former head coach LeAnne Mitchell, who is looking to move into administration work.

Work continues this week for the Winder-Barrow and Apalachee High School football teams.

The AHS Wildcats held a morning workout Monday as the final week of summer drills arrived. Coach David Wagner and the WBHS Bulldoggs will host practice sessions later this week as they prepare to begin the new school year Monday and move to regular after-school practices. [Full Story »]

Summer all but complete for local football players

While many students in Barrow County still have a few days of vacation left, the carefree days of summer break are pretty much over for football players at Winder-Barrow High School and Apalachee High School.

Players and coaches both enjoyed a week off during the Georgia High School Association’s “Dead Week,” a time in which no activity could take place but last Monday work resumed as far as summer conditioning goes. Local football players can be seen on the practice field working on offensive and defensive schemes as well as getting in pre-camp shape.

“It’s really straight football from now on,” first-year WBHS coach David Wagner said. “We are even less than a month from our preseason scrimmage. The summer is over for us. It’s time to go to work and start focusing on football. This is the way it has to be if you are going to compete.” [Full Story »]

Can you sense it? The start of a new gridiron season is just around the corner? We’ve moved from months to weeks now on our “die-hard countdown calendar.”

Perhaps that’s why I dipped into my vast collection of games this past Saturday afternoon and cued up the 1979 Monday Night Football contest between my Atlanta Falcons and the Seattle Seahawks. Quite frankly, I didn’t realize VCRs were even around then (my better half Pam told me they were) but someone had made a copy of this game as it aired on a Seattle station back in the dying days of the 70s, complete with every commercial as well as the entire halftime show. Kevin Morris has been in the coaching game long enough, he has pretty much settled into a routine when it comes to summer work for his Apalachee High School boys basketball team.

The Wildcat mentor traditionally puts his returning players throughout workouts during June and gives them a little time to enjoy their summer. This June was no exception as AHS traveled to the University of Tennessee-Chattonooga before competing in an area league along with East Jackson, Banks County, Commerce and Jefferson. The Georgia sun continues to beat down on us. Day after day, week after week, the afternoon heat (I don’t care about the humidity or other weather-related terms — it’s too darn hot!) is more like a gorilla than a monkey on my back.

How to contend with the summer sun, which you would think after almost four decades of living in our great state I would be used to it by now, is no easy task. For starters, staying inside is a great strategy. Making sure your air conditioner is in top working order is also a must. A cold drink of your favorite beverage is also a requirement along with your favorite recliner in the recline position. [Full Story »]

“Anyone can give up, it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength.”

Clint Spratlin takes the pitcher’s mound for Winder-Barrow High School and appears completely at ease.

His delivery seems effortless. Batter after batter strikes out while facing him. His win total continues to increase with each passing game. He never seems to be rattled, regardless of the circumstance in the game. [Full Story »]
