Wrestlers for both Winder-Barrow High School and Apalachee High School got plenty of mat experience this past weekend at the annual Wildcat Invitational.
Jeff Davis High School was the eventual winner with Clarke Central taking second place. For host AHS, it was a time of learning and gaining valuable experience against some quality opposition.
Jackson Wadsworth (145), Chance Wheeler (195), Jonah Willard (220) and Dalton Hood (heavyweight) were each fourth in their respective weight classes. Mikey Hitchcock was 2-0 during Friday’s action, but was not able to wrestle Saturday as he was taking the ACT.
Dylan Staples, who qualified for state last season for the Mat Wildcats, is still out of action due to injury. Staples hopes to return by the area duals.
“There were a good number of teams,” said AHS coach Graham Burns. “We are very young. Some of our wrestlers I wish I didn’t have to throw out there right now.”
Cameron Best finished third for the WBHS wrestling team.
Best competes at heavyweight for the Mat Bulldoggs.
