The spring air was filled with cheers from the stadium stands this past Friday evening as the Banks County Middle School and High School football teams took to the gridiron for the annual spring scrimmage games. New Head Coach Biff Parson was anxious to see how the team would perform following the practice sessions over the past two weeks.
The middle school teams played two fifteen minute halves and scored touchdowns on several occasions during the scrimmage. " We were pretty pleased with how things went, a lot of young guys were on the field and have not played football before and probably one of the larger groups we have had. Hopefully in July we will be able to get all these guys back and on the same page for the fall season," said BCMS Head Coach Vince Lehotsky.
The high school players took the field for an hour and a half working the ball up and down the field. Several players stepped up into key roles and showed a glimmer of what could come n the next football season.
Coach Biff Parson has worked with the team over the past few weeks and is trying to bring together a family unity feeling amongst the players. The keys are to take care of each other and perform with excellence on and off the field. Coach Parson is still looking for leaders on the team and a few has stepped up into the role. He urges them to do right on the field and at school to set the standard for Banks County.

Eight headed to state: Leopards to compete in state wrestling tournament
Eight Banks County High School wrestlers will be competing in the state tournament this weekend in Macon. The team participated in the AAA East sectional qualifier this past week-end with 8 of the 10 competing advancing to the state tournament.
"As far as I know, we had the most wrestlers advance out of our sectionals to the State Wrestling Tournament than any other team participating this weekend,” head coach Kasey Hanley said. “On the other side of the state, Woodward Academy qualified the most of their sectional with 11 qualifiers."
The matches in the Macon Centreplex on Friday will start at 9 a.m. and will continue through round #7. On Saturday, consolation Semis will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the finals will start at 3 p.m. with a championship opening ceremony at 2:30 p.m.
In addition to the eight competing, BCHS also will have one wrestler that has qualified as an alternate, so nine total wrestlers will be going to Macon.

•Chris McCrackin (freshman) finished second in his weight class at 106 pounds.
•Mason Patton (senior) finished first in his weight class of 126 pounds.

Hewell sets school records in track
The Banks County Leopards track team sent Makayla Hewell to state to compete in the women's 3200 meter run and the women's 1600 meter run. It is Hewell's first year running track and she set two new school records in the 1600 and 3200 events.
Hewell placed seventh in the state 3200 meter run and 13th in the 1600 meter run. Makayla has reaped the benefits of consistent training since last fall. She finished eighth at the region cross country championship in October and has catapulted to seventh in the state women's 3200 meter run.
"Hewell and her training mates have developed a sense of why they train the way we do and the confidence to race well has emerged as a result,” head coach John McCartney said. “With proper training this summer. Makayla should continue to improve and bring more glory to herself, her team, her school, and the Banks County community. I hope God blesses and watches over her as she continues her athletic career."
