Jackson County’s girls’ team has won five-straight games, leads the subregion at 2-0 and is off to a 7-3 start.

But don’t expect Lady Panther coach John Hawley and his team to get too concerned with anything other than preparation following this early success.

Well, Jackson County (7-3, 2-0) continues to improve in the wins department.

The Panthers downed Hart County 49-46 in a key subregion road game Tuesday night.

Savannah Roncadori nailed a 12-foot jumper late to put Jackson County up 47-46 and Bre Drew hit two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to help seal the win. [Full Story »]

The Clarke Central Gladiators scored two touchdowns in the first, second and third quarters Friday night giving them plenty of cushion for a 42-21 win against visiting Apalachee High School.

Martay Mattox and Quenshaun Watson handled most of the scoring chores for the Gladiators, who will likely face Flowery Branch in the final week of the regular season to determine the region champion.

Hoping for a strong start to a contest, Winder-Barrow High School head coach David Wagner once again saw his team dealt an early deficit, one which proved to be too much to climb back from.

“There were some turnovers that changed the tide pretty quick,” Wagner said. “You can’t turn it over against good teams. When you do, things are not going to be on your side and not give you the end result you are looking for.” [Full Story »]

Playoff positioning and a stake in a possible region championship will be at stake this Friday when the Apalachee High School football team ventures into Death Valley to face Clarke Central, the current No. 2 team in Class AAAA.

For the Wildcats, a win is likely necessary if they want to be able to host a state playoff game again this season. AHS already has one loss while Clarke Central is undefeated. A setback this Friday would make it difficult for the Wildcats to finish higher than third. A win, however, and the possibility remains for winning region depending on the matchup in the final regular season game between Clarke Central and Flowery Branch. [Full Story »]

The emotional roller coaster the Winder-Barrow High School football team has been on during the past several days has been admittedly tough to take for coach David Wagner and his players.

Last Friday’s 14-13 overtime loss to Heritage on the road saw the Bulldoggs ever so close to victory, only to see it not materialize. Despite the weight of that setback, Wagner knows another tough road challenge awaits WBHS this week as it travels to Loganville. [Full Story »]

The Clarke Central Gladiators, who advanced all the way to the Class AAAA state championship game in 2009, are the preseason pick to win Region 8-AAAA. The poll was voted on by sports writers who cover schools in the region.

Clarke Central received all but one first place vote with the other going to Rockdale County, which battled the Gladiators in the state semifinals last fall. [Full Story »]

Insane Saturdays Continue At Dragway

It was a bit of old school racing at the Atlanta Dragway Saturday for the fifth Saturday Insanity event, after a lightning strike last week disabled the time slip printers, meaning that staff members had to copy each run down by hand.

That didn’t affect the racing, however, as it was fast and furious on the quarter mile. [Full Story »]

Smith Tops Sinack In Dragway Reprise

Atlanta Dragway hosted the fourth Saturday Insanity event over the weekend, with racing in the Open Comp, 6.50 and 7.50 index classes.

Bishop’s David Smith and Stan Sinack of Lilburn gave the crowd déjà-vu, running head-to-head in the 6.50 Index finals for a second time. Sinack won their last pairing back on June 19. Smith gained a great advantage with a .003 reaction time while Sinack rushed after with a .029 green light. [Full Story »]
