Tigers Roar Into Postseason

The Commerce Tigers wrapped up their regular season last week, beating both Towns County and Tallulah Falls to end the regular season with a seven-game winning streak. Commerce went 10-2 in the region, and 17-5 overall en route to taking the subregion title.

In the meantime, two Tigers received All-Region honors, as Brandon Romans was named Region 8A Player of the Year, while Anthony Norris was selected to the first-team All-Region.

Now the Tigers prepare for the postseason, as they were slated to open up region tournament play at home Tuesday against Social Circle. [Full Story »]

The East Jackson Eagles wrapped up the regular season last week with losses to Jefferson and North Oconee. The late-season slide left them fifth in the subregion, trailing Hart County, Elbert, Jefferson and Jackson County with a 4-8 record (9-16 overall).

The Eagles were slated to open up region play on Tuesday in Hart County against Dawson County.

The Tigers finished fourth in 8A-AA, trailing East Hall, Union County and Rabun County with a 4-6 record (15-8 overall). [Full Story »]

The Commerce Lady Tigers tacked on one more win to their tally as they closed the regular season last week.

After falling earlier in the week to Towns County, the Lady Tigers rebounded with a Senior Night victory over Tallulah Falls Friday.

That left Commerce 5-8 in the region (8-13) overall and 4-2 in the subregion, which has them seeded number two in 8A north. [Full Story »]

Savage Named Coach Of The Year

Before a crowd that included some of the top football coaches in the Southeastern Conference, former Commerce head football coach Steve Savage accepted an award last Tuesday from Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith.

Smith presented just the second Atlanta Falcons High School Coach of the Year Award to Savage, who ended a 35-year-coaching career last December. The occasion was a College Coaches Luncheon hosted by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association in Forsyth. [Full Story »]

The Commerce mat Tigers had a strong showing in the area tournament at Jefferson over the weekend, qualifying 13 of 14 wrestlers for this weekend’s sectional tournament at Social Circle.

Four wrestlers won Area championships in their respective weight classes, including Cody Legg (103 lbs.), Josh Westmoreland (130 lbs.), Addison Davis (160 lbs.) and Chance McClure (189 lbs.).

Three Tigers were area runners-up, including Drew Whitfield (119 lbs.), Greyson Cochran (135 lbs.) and Serguio Rojas (285 lbs.). [Full Story »]

Two Eagles Move On To Sectionals

Two mat Eagles will advance to this week’s sectionals in Dublin after qualifying in the area traditional tournament at Jefferson Saturday.

Drew Hunter took second in the 189 lb. class, while Jesse Moore placed third in the 215 lb. category to qualify for the traditional sectional tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Dublin.

Two other wrestlers, Parker Wilson (285 lbs.) and Victor Equirte (135 lbs.), placed as alternates for the tournament.

Tigers Clinch Subregion Title

A trio of wins last week against Riverside, Social Circle and Lakeview not only extended the Commerce Tigers’ win streak to five, but it also allowed them to clinch first place in the subregion.

Commerce clinched the subregion lead title with a thrilling last-shot win over Lakeview Saturday night in the CHS gym.

After back-to-back losses to Jackson County and Jefferson last week, the East Jackson Lady Eagles will travel to Bogart Friday to face North Oconee.

North Oconee comes into the week fresh off a 75-14 shellacking of Oglethorpe County, making it 6-3 in the region and 16-6 overall.

The Lady Eagles are still looking for their first win against North Oconee. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. [Full Story »]

It was a good week for the Commerce Lady Tigers who beat Oglethorpe, Social Circle and Lakeview Academy, putting together their best winning streak of the season and locking up the number two seed in 8-A North.

Commerce was scheduled to travel to Towns County on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Tigers will try to end the season on a winning note Friday night when they host Tallulah Falls, which is winless in region play. [Full Story »]

The East Jackson Eagles find themselves in a late season slump after dropping games to Jackson County and Jefferson last week. That puts them at 4-6 in the region and 9-14 overall, trailing Hart, Elbert and Jefferson in the region standings.

The Eagles will wrap up their regular season Friday as they travel to Bogart to face the North Oconee Titans.

The Titans are coming off of a 53-48 victory over Oglethorpe County, leaving them 2-7 in the region and 7-15 overall. [Full Story »]
