The Madison County netters are consistently improving this season as both boys’ and girls’ teams prepare to face non region opponent Hart County this afternoon (Thursday).

Both varsity teams are 8-1 overall as the Red Raiders are undefeated in region play and the Lady Red Raiders are 4-1.

Following today’s match with Hart County, Madison County takes on Apalachee in region play Monday. The Red Raiders host the matches starting at 4:30 p.m. Next Tuesday, the netters host Flowery Branch at 4 p.m. [Full Story »] 

Madison County’s diamond Red Raiders were busy at the end of last week with two non-region games Friday and Saturday.

The boys handily defeated Prince Avenue and then fell to Duluth, Saturday. The win and loss leave Madison County 5-2 overall as the Red Raiders started region play this week.

Taking on Rockdale County Wednesday, the boys were looking to continue a six-game win streak over the Bulldogs. Results from Wednesday’s game were unavailable at press time. The Red Raiders haven’t lost to Rockdale since the 2007 season.

Coming up, Madison County continues region play, heading to Cedar Shoals Friday. A win in the 5:30 p.m. game would also be the seventh straight win for Madison County over the cross-region opponent. [Full Story »] 

Madison County’s soccer teams recently faced three tough region opponents.

Taking on Rockdale, Salem and Loganville since the start of the month, the Red Raiders have improved to 4-3 overall, including two region wins, while the Lady Red Raiders have battled for their 2-5 record.

The teams were scheduled to take on Flowery Branch at home Tuesday night (March 15). Results were unavailable at press time. Still ahead for the Madison County soccer program is this Saturday’s Alumni Game starting at 3 p.m. at the Red Raider stadium. Coaches and organizers are inviting all alumni to attend.

The Madison County varsity teams return to action next Monday, March 21, as the Red Raiders and Lady Red Raiders host Jefferson in a non-region match. On Wednesday, the teams will return to region competition taking on Habersham Central at home in the rescheduled game from earlier in the month.

The girls will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. in both match-ups. [Full Story »] 

Banks County’s golfers added two rounds to their season totals this past week.

Last Tuesday, the boys played Riverside and Lakeview in a tri-match. Scored results were unavailable, but the boys lost according to coaches.

On Thursday, despite high winds, Banks County girls and took on Jefferson and Madison County at Double Oaks, as the boys faced Jefferson.

While the Madison County team shot the lowest overall score of 91, Banks County’s Lady Leopards did defeat Jefferson 94-99. The boys played a tough match but were defeated 167-207 by the Dragons.

Coming up for the golfers the team was set to take on Habersham at The Orchard golf course Tuesday, but whether weather factored into that round was unclear at press time. Still ahead the teams take on Commerce at Scales Creek Country Club Thursday.

Madison County’s netters are hitting their stride as the teams played two matches last Thursday.

Due to rain at the beginning of the week, the match with Rockdale County was moved in tandem with the match against Flowery Branch. Both Madison County boys and girls teams defeated Rockdale, 3-2, and the boys defeated Flowery Branch 4-1, but the girls were defeated 1-4 by the Falcons.

This week, the Red Raider netters played Habersham Tuesday and were scheduled to face Clarke Central Wednesday. Results from these matches will be printed in next week’s Madison County Journal.

The Madison County High School Rifle Raiders, number one in Area 4 East, conquered Lakeside High School, #6 in Area 4 West in their second contest with them this season, blasting away the competition with a score of 1132-1009.

Garret Cook led the scoring with a 290, followed by J. S. Fielding (285), Julie Wood (281) and Parker Mize (276). Dalton Crumley also shot (260), but his score was dropped.

Madison County’s overall standing in Area 4 had not yet been determined as of press time.

The Rifle Raiders first sectional match against an opposing team from Area 8 had not yet been scheduled as of press time.

Banks County’s Leopards’ tennis team have three matches under their belts so far and are 2-1 as the boys prepare for this week, before the battle for sub-region dominance begins.

With rain delays hindering practices and expected to delay today’s (Wednesday) practice as well, coach Mike Ruth said that Thursday’s match is the first real test as Banks County takes on Rabun County on the road. The match starts at 4 p.m.

“I feel we can compete with these sub-region teams,” Ruth said. “With Rabun, Dawson, Fannin and East Hall all playing in the sub-region, it will be competitive. But, if we can get some more practice time I think we will be competitive with them.” [Full Story »]
