BC netters secure playoff berth; region tourney ahead

The Banks County netters took the week off for spring break this week, and to take a moment to catch their breath before the region tournament next week. Banks County heads to North Oconee next Thursday, April 14, to compete for playoff seeding as both the Leopards and Lady Leopards swept through the sub-region this season 4-0 to earn the sub-region title.

The BCHS netters take a first round bye and are guaranteed a spot into the state playoffs. The region tournament results will just determine seeding for the playoffs. For the boys, this means that Banks County will face the winner of Jefferson and Rabun County. For the girls’ team, the Lady Leopards face the winner of Hart County versus the number three seed from 8-AA North.

Raiders to play Winder-Barrow

The varsity Red Raiders’ soccer team played two very different games in the week prior to spring break.

In the March 23 game with Habersham Central, the Red Raiders played a strong effort and forced the Habersham Raiders to work for the 3-0 win.

“We lost to Habersham last year, 10-1, so I was proud of the progress that we made,” said coach Trevor Mangan. “We had a few chances during the course of the game, but were unable to take advantage of them. The backline had a good game overall, as did our goalie Sebastian Jones.”

In the Friday game before the break, Apalachee defeated the Madison County boys 6-1.

Netters improve to 13-3 before region

Madison County’s netters ended the regular season Wednesday at home hosting Clarke Central. While results were unavailable at press time, both teams were 13-3 heading into the final match.

Still ahead for Madison County is the region tournament, starting next Thursday, April 14. The region tourney will be hosted at Madison County’s courts. A rain date, if needed, is set for Saturday, April 16.

In the final matches of the regular season, Madison County’s teams fell to North Oconee, the 8-AA South top seed, before adding wins over Apalachee and Winder-Barrow, leaving the Red Raider netters 13-3 before yesterday’s match. [Full Story »]

The Banks County Leopards had a string of bad luck before spring break but made up for it with a big win over East Hall.

After falling to Dawson County, the boys went on to face Rabun County last Thursday then Union County on Friday. This week while the school is on spring break, the boys were back on the diamond facing East Hall Tuesday.

This afternoon (Wednesday) the boys are scheduled to host Dawson County at 5:30 p.m. Then in a rescheduled game, the Leopards head to Fannin County Friday, April 8. [Full Story »]

Madison County’s diamond Red Raiders added one win over the past four games.

The 21-4, seven inning victory last week was the high point of the team’s spring break play after Madison County opened the week with a 6-2 loss to Habersham Central, followed by last Friday’s game where Loganville blanked the Red Raiders 7-0.

Returning to the diamond this week, Madison County hosted Flowery Branch Monday. The Falcons barely slipped past the Red Raiders in the 6-4 game, leaving Madison County 9-6 overall. Full stats from the Flowery Branch game will be in next week's Madison County Journal. [Full Story »]

Banks County’s diamond Leopards were skunked last Thursday by Dawson County.

The Tigers defeated the current sub-region number two 8A-AA Leopards moving Banks County’s overall record to 5-4.

This week, rain canceled Monday’s game with Rabun County, 3-4 in the sub-region and 4-6 overall. The rescheduled sub-region game date against the Wildcats had not been announced at press time. [Full Story »]

Some cold water was doused on the Red Raider baseball team’s hot 2011 start this past week.

Madison County dropped two games, narrowly falling to Winder 9-8 last week, then dropping a game Monday to Habersham Central 6-2.

The diamond Raiders are now 8-4, 3-2 (in region play). Madison County was scheduled to face Clarke Central Wednesday, but results weren’t available as of press time. [Full Story »]

Lady Leopards defeat Rabun Co.

Banks County’s Lady Leopards broke their losing streak on the soccer field last week 1-0 win over Rabun County. The first win of the season, secured by senior Starr Thurmond, was followed by a very tough sub-region game Friday.

The Lady Leopards took on Union County on the road and were defeated 4-0.

With the loss dropping the team to 1-9 overall, the girls now look to pull together for the remaining matches of the season.

Raider netters to face Barrow squads

Now come the volleys with two Barrow County squads.

Madison County’s guys’ and girls’ squads are both 11-2 overall. They will soon face Apalachee and Winder-Barrow after returning from this week’s spring break.

On Monday, the girls will play at Apalachee High School, while the boys face the Wildcats at the YMCA courts. Matches are set for 4 p.m. [Full Story »]
