It was a big day Friday for the Madison County netters at the region tournament.

During the tourney, the Red Raiders tore through the brackets, winning their fifth region title, the first since the 2006 season, insuring the team’s third consecutive state tournament appearance.

Madison County’s girls’ golf team found the fairway, found the greens and found the region trophy — again.

The girls’ golf team won the region championship for the third straight year. This tournament was held at Double Oaks Golf Course in Commerce.

“Winning the third region title in a row is a testament to how committed these girls are to the game,” said coach Doug Kesler. “We posted the three lowest scores of the day. With Cortney, Kelsey and Katie Jane, we have 3 girls who are playing pretty much year-round. They deserve all the credit and praise.”

Cortney Boggs was the region low medalist with a score of 73. This is one of the lowest scores ever recorded in region 8AAAA girls’ golf tournament, and this is an 18-hole school record for Madison County. [Full Story »]

Cleveland named boys’ basketball coach

Banks County announced the hiring of Mike Cleveland as the varsity boys’ basketball coach.

Cleveland will take over for coach Mike Ruth, who announced his retirement last month.

Coming from Hart County, Cleveland’s most recent season in the south side of 8-AA resulted in a 20-9, 12-2 record, the number three seed in the region and reaching the first round of the playoffs.

The players are scheduled to meet the new coach on Friday at the high school, according to school officials.

Golfers look to final rounds

In a recent round, the Banks County’s boys’ golf team earned third in a four-way on the links.

Banks County shot a combined 213 while Lincoln County took the win with a final score of 180. Washington Wilkes earned second shooting 201 and Green County shot 226 for fourth.

This afternoon (Wednesday) the Banks County golfers were back at Samples Scales/Hammers Glen hosting Washington Wilkes and Madison County.

On Thursday, the teams will take on Jackson County at Traditions golf course. The Thursday round will be a good play through for the teams as they prepare for the region tournament set for April 18, also at Traditions.

Madison County’s Lady Red Raider golfers played their final regular season match Wednesday against Banks County at Hammers Glen in Homer.
Results from the final round were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Red Raiders next compete in the region tournament Monday, April 18, at Double Oaks. Tee-off time is set for 8:30 a.m.

On Monday, April 11, the girls defeated Habersham, North Oconee and Clarke Central at Double Oaks. Madison County scored the low 80, led by Katie Jane Phillips in her career best 38. Cortney Boggs completed with a 42.

Habersham shot 92 for second, followed by North Oconee recording 108 and Clarke Central with a 136.

The boys were scheduled to take on Clarke Central and Oglethorpe Monday, but results were unavailable at press time. The Red Raiders also competed in the season closer against Banks County, Wednesday.

Madison County’s track team has the region meets in sight and hopefully a look further into the state meet.

The boys’ region meet is ahead April 20-22, hosted at Loganville. The Lady Red Raiders’ region meet is at the end of the month, April 27-29, also at Loganville. The girls recently finished out their scheduled season events Tuesday in Elbert County. Results from the meet were unavailable at press time.

The Red Raiders also competed at Elbert County, Tuesday, but will finish out their schedule this weekend in Jefferson as the Madison County boys compete in the Jefferson Relays, April 16. [Full Story »]

Madison County’s diamond Red Raiders suffered a hard loss to Winder-Barrow Monday night at home. The Red Raiders were offed by the Bulldoggs, 20-1 in a three inning game.

Haden Martin landed the sole run for Madison County with a home run.

Madison County managed three hits from 11 batters, while Winder put 13 hits into play. The Bulldoggs scored 14 runs in the third and final inning.

Madison County now looks to shake off Monday’s performance as the team enters the final stretch of the regular season. The Red Raiders have to win the remaining games for a chance to advance into the region playoffs at the end of the season. [Full Story »]

Leopards drop four games

On the diamond, the Banks County baseball team is preparing for the final three games of the regular season.

Diamond Leopards take on Fannin County today (Wednesday) at home at 5:30 p.m., before Friday’s final regular season home game against Union County. Opening pitch on Friday is at 5:30 p.m. Friday is also Senior Night for the Banks County Leopards.

The Leopards end the regular season Monday, April 18, against Westside.

After defeating East Hall 11-1 last Tuesday, the boys entered a three game rut losing to Dawson County 10-1; Fannin County 13-3 and Rabun County 0-3.
Banks County played Commerce Tuesday night and were blown-out 14-0.

Banks County netters are set to start the region tournament tomorrow, Thursday, at North Oconee. Both Banks County teams put in a week of final practice for preparation for the tournament.

Both teams take a first round bye as the sub-region champions in the region tourney. The region tournament will determine seeding into the state tournament as both the Leopards and Lady Leopards look to push deep into the playoffs.

A rain date has also been posted if the region tournament is forced to be postponed, the games will be completed on Saturday, April 16.

The region tournament begins at 9 a.m. Thursday, with the number three seed and the number two seed matches. Banks County’s teams play the winner.
