Tigers Host North Oconee Friday

Three points may not seem like much, but to the Commerce Tigers, it’s been a significant number so far this season.

The Commerce Lady Tigers find themselves looking to snap a six-game losing streak after dropping games to Prince Avenue and Social Circle last week.

Their first chance is a make-up game at Athens Christian Thursday at 4:45 from a rainout on Aug. 17.

The Lady Eagles enter the week in a skid of their own, having lost last week to Social Circle. Athens Christian is also in search of its first win of 2010. [Full Story »]

Thursday was a long night of volleyball for the Lady Eagles of East Jackson, as they lost to Athens Christian and Jackson County in matches that went three sets each.

Up next for the Lady Eagles is a home stand against Rabun County and West Hall on Thursday.

“We’ve got some tough competition coming up this week, but I think we’re ready for it,” said coach Tim Thomas. “We matched up very well with West Hall earlier in the season and nearly beat them. We’re hoping to give them another strong run this week, but they’re not ranked in the top 10 in AAA for nothing. We’re going to have to be at our best if we hope to repeat the performance we turned in against them a few weeks ago.” [Full Story »]

A missed field goal just over six minutes into Friday night's game at Oconee County may have been the difference between having a shot at victory and defeat for the East Jackson Eagles, who came up just three points short in the end, losing to the Warriors 17-14.

Both teams held each other at a draw through the first quarter, with East Jackson drawing first blood just over four minutes into the second. The Eagles came up with the ball after a botched field goal attempt by Oconee County. The Eagles would run the ball all the way back to the Warriors' end zone, scoring the first points of the night. Mark it down as a promising opener for the East Jackson Eagles Cross Country teams.

Both the boys and girls teams took part in the NEGA Championships at Athens Christian on Saturday. The girls placed fourth out of 18 teams, while the boys finished 11th out of 26 schools.

Sherri Blalock finished third overall among the girls out of 143 runners. Courtney McDowell placed 16th, Amanda Anderson 37th, Skyler Cozzens 38th, McKenzie Parr 48th, Courtney Clark 82nd, Caroline Flynn 83rd, Corbin Williams 97th and Elizabeth Allred 124th. [Full Story »]

The Lady Eagles continue to look for their first win of the 2010 softball campaign.

Coming off of a pair of losses last week, the Lady Eagles fell to 0-3 and are hoping their first ever pairing with the Lady Panthers of Jackson County will give them an opportunity to turn things around.

Jackson County enters the match-up fresh off a victory over Elbert County. The Lady Panthers are off to an extremely strong start in 2010, going 2-0 early on in region play and 3-0-2 overall. The two ties came in timed-out tournament games. [Full Story »]

After going 1-3 last week, picking up a victory over Alcovy, the East Jackson Lady Eagles volleyball team WILL face several area opponents over the coming days.

On Thursday, the Lady Eagles will host non-area Athens Christian and Jackson County in their second area match of the season.

“This will be the biggest night of the season for us so far,” said East Jackson coach Tim Thomas. “The rematch with Athens Christian will be big, because we want to prove that we’re better than we played them last week. But the bigger match is Jackson County, since they’re on our side of the area.” [Full Story »]

Commerce Loses Opener 17-14

Following a thrilling 17-14 loss to Jefferson Friday in the season opener, the Commerce Tigers will try to even their record Friday night in Carnesville against the AAA Franklin County Lions.

The Lions enter the non-region contest off a 14-14 tie with Hart County. Franklin County has won the last three games against Commerce, with the Tigers’ last win coming in September of 2006. [Full Story »]

After A 21-14 Loss To White Co., Eagles To Take On Oconee County

With just over three minutes left to play, it looked like the East Jackson Eagles might hang on to a one-point lead and pick up a season-opening win against White County.

But after first signaling the Eagles had recovered a muffed kick, the referees awarded possession to the White County Warriors, who scored the winning touchdown 90 seconds later to steal a 21-14 win. [Full Story »]

The Lady Tigers enter play this week looking to rebound from a rough outing in the Towns County Invitational that saw them go 1-3 on the weekend.

Commerce will host Social Circle in a region pairing on Thursday. The game was originally slated to be played at Social Circle, but a scheduling conflict moved it to Commerce instead. The first pitch is at 5:45.

The Lady Redskins are fresh off a loss to George Walton Academy. They currently stand 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the region. [Full Story »]
