AHS swimmers improve times

The Apalachee High School swimming teams were among the 48 schools taking part in a large event at Westminster in Atlanta last weekend.
AHS coach John Slater said the event is a preliminary to the state swim meet.

“Many state qualifiers did not even make the finals for their events,” the AHS coach said. “Most of our swimmers were able to improve their times. The boys improved their time in the 400 free relay time.”

Slater also noted AHS took some bragging rights in the Battle of Barrow County with the Lady Wildcats defeating Winder-Barrow in two of three events.
Overall, the AHS swim program is young this season with four seniors.

Amanda Laufer is the lone Lady Wildcat senior with Aaron Oarides, Patrick McConnell and Sam Tilley providing the leadership for the boys team.
“Their swimming and leadership will be missed,” Slater said.

The AHS coach also noted a year ago the program finished the season with only four swimmers while that number has grown to 17 this year.
“Next season looks even better, especially if the YMCA indoor pool is ready,” Slater said.
