With 16 wins under her team’s belt, Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldogg coach Brenda Hill can’t hide the fact she is proud of her team’s accomplishments to this point in the 2008-09 season.
As she examines her team’s three most recent victories, the second-year WBHS coach said he likes the fact a balanced attack has been a key element in the wins.
“Our starting five and players off the bench all contributed Saturday against Heritage,” Hill said Sunday after breaking the previous night’s game down. “Julie (Maloch) made some key steals. Mimi (Hill) and Brittany (Witt) played well. Shant (Finch) had a big three-pointer and Lauren (Hamel) had some key baskets.”
A team effort is something Coach Hill stresses from her players so when the team performances result in close wins like the double overtime one Saturday, the coach takes heart in it.
“We have been preaching, ‘it is not one person who wins, it’s a team effort,’” the coach said.
The Lady Bulldoggs also notched a close 52-48 win Friday against Cedar Shoals. Mimi Hill had 24 points and 14 boards while Hamel finished with nine points.
Witt added seven points and six assists in Friday’s victory for WBHS.
The WBHS girls began its recent three-game stretch by defeating Habersham Central 49-44.
“It’s tough to play three games in a week,” Coach Hill said. “Cedar Shoals was a very emotional and physical game.”
The Lady Bulldoggs did not have to play Tuesday night this week so Hill gave the team Monday off from practice.
Tuesday’s practice included individual session time with position players as two important games are on the horizon for this weekend.
WBHS will travel to Madison County Friday before hosting Apalachee Saturday.
“We will work on a new strategy for Madison County,” Hill said. “We will be a little more rested this time. They are a very good team. They are at the top of our region for a reason. We will regroup and be ready.”
The Lady Bulldogg coach said it will be important for team to prepare for Friday’s contest and not look ahead to the Apalachee game Saturday.
