Hundreds of area residents turned out Saturday for the official opening of Duncan Creek Park. While the park has been open to visitors since May 22, county employees have been busy putting the finishing touches on the 88-acre facility in preparation for the June 14 grand opening.
The jewel of the facility is the 20,000 square-foot lighted skate complex, the fifth and largest skate park to date in Gwinnett County. Several professional skateboarders were on hand Saturday to demonstrate their skills and offer safety courses for those in attendance.
In addition to the skate area, Duncan Creek Park has a football complex with a concession stand, bleachers and a press box. The football field is encircled by a 12 foot wide, .33 mile asphalt track.
The park has two lighted full size basketball courts, two half-court basketball courts and three lighted sand volleyball courts. The site has also been graded for a future inline hockey rink.
The playground area is 15,000 square feet with handicap accessible features and is adjacent to the 60’ octagonal open pavilion.
By late next year, the park will also be home to the Hamilton Mill library. The much-anticipated library will be Gwinnett’s fifteenth library.
Among the local dignitaries present at the park’s opening was Gwinnett County commission chairman Charles Bannister. Bannister said the new park had been “a long time coming.”
“We want to thank all the area residents, advisors and long-range planners and all who helped determine the special features of this park,” he said.
According to Bannister, Gwinnett County has a nationally known and nationally recognized park program.
“It is one of the many things that pulls people to this area, to Gwinnett County,” he said.
Bannister said as the area continues to grow and develop, the county is continuing to put infrastructure in place to deal with the development.
“So think about that in November,” he said.
Dist. 3 commissioner Mike Beaudreau, who is up for re-election this year, was also present at the grand opening ceremonies.
Beaudreau said Saturday was an exciting day for Gwinnett County.
“For those of us who have watched this project since its inception, to see it come to fruition is really quite special,” he said.
Beaudreau highlighted the partnership Gwinnett County has with the Mill Creek Athletic Association. The association helped construct the press box at the football complex.
“That is just one more example of the partnership our government has with its citizens,” he said.
In addition to the traffic signal and turn lanes already installed at the park’s entrance, more traffic improvements are on the way according to Beaudreau. Surveying has already begun on the Hwy. 124 road widening project.
“You will be seeing some dirt turned very soon,” he said.
Dist. 1 commissioner and county chairman candidate Lorraine Greene said she was particularly interested in Duncan Creek Park.
“As the mother of two teenage boys, I fully understand and appreciate how important it is to keep them busy with the activities they want to do,” she said.
Greene praised the citizen’s committee for keeping teenagers in mind when designing the skate park, beach volleyball courts, basketball courts and other amenities.
“The kids love this kind of stuff and it’s important that we support what they want to do,” she said. “They’re such an overlooked group in our society and they’re one of the most important groups.”
Duncan Creek Park is located at 3700 Braselton Highway. The park is open from sunup until 11 p.m. For more information, visit the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation web site at www.GwinnettCounty.com.
