Dragons take second at Habersham ‘Sham Slam’

Any weekend that you can finish second to the best team in Georgia, it’s a good weekend.

That’s the way that the Jefferson Mat Dragons are looking at Saturday’s performance in the Sham Slam at Habersham Central High School, where they placed second to Collins Hill, a team that is nationally ranked and has four team members that are nationally ranked.

Collins Hill took top honors with 335 points, while Jefferson finished with 211. Lafayette placed third with 192 points, followed by Northwest Whitfield and Woodland.

It was also a strong showing considering Jefferson was down three wrestlers, as one was out with a kidney infection and another due to injury. The third was out of town on a football visit, according to coach Doug Thurmond.

Regardless, the remaining team members all managed to place.

Cam Thurmond took top honors in the 135 lb. category. Other places included Isaac Kelley, who placed second in the 103 lb. class; Cason Thurmond placed fifth in the 112 lb. category; Daniel Barber placed fifth in the 119 lb. category; Cutler Finch placed second in the 125 lb. category; Cain Finch placed third in the 130 lb. class; Wayne Elliott placed fourth in the 140 lb. category; Jay Fowler placed second in the 152 lb. category; Virgil Appleby placed sixth in the 160 lb. class; Zach Allen placed fifth in the 189 lb. category; and Patrick Allen placed second in the 215 lb. class.
