Mill Creek’s Matthew Grimes has been selected as a member of junior Team Georgia. Each year, high school coaches throughout the state choose the top 20 rising juniors for the team.
Grimes, a pitcher, was 4-2 last season for the region 7-AAAAA champion Hawks.
Grimes is joined on the junior team by local players Chris Beck of Jefferson High School and Brandon Jacobs of Parkview High School.
Each year, Team Georgia represents the state in the Sunbelt Classic baseball tournament in Oklahoma. The Sunbelt Classic began in 1977 as an all-star tournament between the states of Oklahoma and California. Over the years, the tournament has expanded to include Georgia, Florida, Ohio, Maryland, Texas and Arizona.
Junior Team Georgia has won the series in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004.
The senior team, comprised of the top 20 rising seniors in the state, has won the championship five times, winning the series in 1990, 1991, 1996, 1997, and 2002.
The Sunbelt Classic showcases some of the most talented high school baseball players in each participating state. Of the 180 players who have represented Georgia to date in the tournament, 80 have played Division I baseball, 14 have played Division II, 60 have played at the junior college level and 35 have signed to play professional baseball.
