Lanier National Speedway will be a busy place this weekend, as the Braselton speedway plays host to the SpeedFest 2009 race weekend, Jan. 23-25.
SpeedFest will culminate on Sunday with a 200-lap Super Late Model event, and a 100-lap Pro Lat Model event. Qualifying events for both divisions will be held on Saturday, with Friday serving as an open practice day for all competitors.
Several local drivers are scheduled to take part in the weekend’s events, including Jefferson’s Nick Potts, Jimmy Garmon of Braselton, Russell Fleeman of Dacula, Shawn Simpson of Talmo, and John Wes Townley of Watkinsville.
Among those scheduled to hit the track is NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kyle Busch, who will be racing in the Super Late Model event on Sunday.
“It’ll be my first race of the year, and I’m looking forward to it,” said Busch, who won eight times on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series last year. “It’s all about having fun, enjoying racing and giving back to local short track racing. I want to get people to come out and see how good of a show it really is. It’s a fun race to watch.
“The more I can do to give back to the type of racing that helped me is great; hopefully we can make events like this live for a long time.”
Busch competed in last year’s version of SpeedFest, which was held at USA Int’l Speedway in Lakeland, Fla., and finished seventh. This year he is looking forward to the challenge that is Lanier’s 3/8’s of a mile oval.
“Last year at Lakeland was the first time I’ve been to SpeedFest, and it went fairly well. But, I think Lanier will be really fun because it’s a nice short track and it’s really tight. Hopefully we’ll get a great crowd in the stands to support local short track racing and the CRA Series because I think it will be a good race.”
In addition to Busch’s team, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Stremme will also have his team competing at SpeedFest with driver Matt DiBenedetto. Former NASCAR Champion Bill Elliott’s development team will be competing in both the Pro and the Super Late Model portions of SpeedFest weekend with driver Casey Roderick.
In addition, Elliott will serve as Grand Marshal for Sunday’s events.
“I’m very happy to be involved with Lanier and their SpeedFest activities this weekend,” said Elliott. “It’s always fun when we come to Lanier with my son Chase in his Legends Car, but I’m usually wearing the crew chief hat so I am busy getting his car ready and focusing on him. It will be nice to have some time at SpeedFest to meet with the fans and to support Lanier and the grassroots racing that drives our sport.”
Elliott said he is especially eager to watch his development driver, Roderick, run in both events on Sunday.
“It will be his first Super Late Model start and he’s up against some big names. He’s had some great runs this year, and we’re all hoping for another strong finish that might attract some sponsorship interest so we can really get him going this year.”
