Eagles take two region wins

The Eagles played host to the Titans of North Oconee last Tuesday. East Jackson took control early, taking a decisive 36-16 lead into halftime after outscoring the Titans 23-4 in the second quarter. East Jackson would remain in control of the game throughout the second half, and would cruise to a 58-46 victory.

Kolby Gilbert led the Eagles in scoring with 28 points, along with 12 rebounds and six blocks. Standrick Stephens scored 12, while Jermaine Davis scored ten after coming off the bench in the second quarter.

“It was great getting off to a good start in sub-region play,” said coach Brian Turner. “We hope to build on (that) throughout the remainder of the season.”

Friday brought a road trip, as the Eagles traveled to Fannin County to face the Rebels.

It was a close game from the beginning, as the score was tied at the end of the half and at the end of the third quarter. The tight game came down to the last nine seconds, when Kaharie Beasley sank the decisive free throws
that gave the Eagles a four point lead in the final moments.

In the end, East Jackson came away with their second region win of the week with a 53-51 final.

Evan Williamson led in scoring with a career high 13 points, all of which came in the fourth quarter.

Stephens scored 12 points, while Beasley also had 12.

“The kids deserve a lot of credit for staying together to pull off a close victory when there were many distractions where they could have lost their focus in a very hostile environment,” Turner said.

East Jackson was scheduled to travel to Oglethorpe County for a region game on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.
