After splitting the first two games of the Oconee Warrior Classic with a loss to Sevier Co., Tenn., and a win over Prince Avenue, the Lady Dragons of Jefferson were looking to finish their tournament play on a high note, as they faced off against Clarke Central to see who would place fifth in the tournament.
Things didn’t go their way, however, as Jefferson took home a loss in the contest, their eighth of the season.
Next up for the Lady Dragons is a trip to Franklin County on Saturday, where they’ll face off against a strong Lady Lions team.
Going into play on Tuesday, Franklin County was 10-1 overall, and 3-0 in their region. Add to it the fact that Franklin County has defeated Jefferson in their last four meetings. That means the Lady Dragons will need to be on top of their game when they get to Carnesville on Saturday.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Hot off of a 59-26 victory over Prince Avenue, the Lady Dragons were looking to build momentum going into the New Year’s break.
But that momentum was halted by the Lady Gladiators, who took control of the game early.
The Lady Dragons had trouble making shots in the first half, going 3-19 from the floor and 3-6 from the foul line. Jefferson found themselves down 31-12 at the half.
Jefferson began fighting back when they hit the court in the third quarter, and cut Clarke Central’s lead to 10 with about 1:30 left on the clock in the third. The Lady Gladiators were able to gain a little edge back, and led 38-25 going into the fourth quarter.
Jefferson stayed within shouting distance, keeping the lead around 12 points with three minutes left in the game. But Clarke Central went on another run to take the 58-35 win.
Callie Holloway led Jefferson in scoring with nine points, while Marcayla Hester and Erin Knight both scored seven.
Emily Jacobs scored four points, but exited the game during the second half with a sprained ankle. Stephanie Fincher also scored four points.
“The score didn’t show it, but I thought our kids played pretty well,” said coach Jason Gibson. “I think if we had shot the ball a little better in the first half and gotten a few more stops on the defensive end in the second half, it would have been a lot closer.
“We did some very good things and I was excited to see us do it against a team like Clarke Central, who is a very good basketball team that I’m sure will do well in Region 8 AAAA.“
The Lady Dragons were scheduled to play host to Fannin County on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.
