Put another check in the win column for the Jefferson Mat Dragons after they took first place honors by over 100 points in the Morgan County Invitational Saturday.
Now Jefferson gets a few days to catch their breath before traveling to Alpharetta to take part in the Chattahoochee Invitational on Jan. 2 and 3.
Jefferson scored 315 points en route to Saturday’s win, beating out second place Banks County with 214, third place Morgan County with 209, and fourth place Newton County with 177.
All 14 JHS wrestlers placed in the top four Saturday, with six taking home wins.
Those winners included Jason Thurmond in the 112 lb. class; Daniel Barber in the 119 lb. category; Cam Thurmond in the 135 lb. category; Jay Fowler in the 160 lb. category; Zack Allen in the 189 lb. class; and Patrick Allen in the 215 lb. category.
Second place finishers included Isaac Kelley in the 103 lb. class; Cutler Finch in the 130 lb. category; Wayne Elliott in the 140 lb. category; and Zack Crosby in the 171 lb. class.
Finishing third was Forrest Przybysz in the 145 lb. class, and Ben Knight in the 152 lb. category. Finishing fourth was Ryan Deblocker in the 125 lb. category, and Cole Hightower took fourth in heavyweight.
Cam Thurmond was named outstanding wrestler for the tournament.
“The boys all wrestled very well,” said coach Doug Thurmond.
Thurmond said the win was an important one going into the Christmas break.
“It gives them something to be proud of as a team,” he said. “It’s also more preparation for the state dual and traditional championship, which we’re shooting for down the line. That’s what we’re shooting for.“
Before they can enjoy that break, however, the Mat Dragons were scheduled to travel to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., to take part in the Smokey Mountain Duals on Monday and Tuesday. Results from that meet were unavailable at press time.
