It was another solid result for the Jackson County Mat Panthers, as they placed sixth in the South Forsyth Santa Slam over the weekend.
Jackson County had 148 points, while winner North Forsyth amassed 279.5. The Mat Panthers finished just nine and a half points out of fourth place.
Five wrestlers placed at South Forsyth for Jackson County, including a first place in the 189 lb. category for Ryan Howe.

Mat Panthers place sixth at Santa Slam
Howe had to battle back from losing his first match of the year on Friday night. He faced three difficult matches on Saturday, and beat each one to take top honors in his class.
“It was a great tournament for him, and a great learning experience,” said coach Jason Powers
Other placers for JCCHS included Cole Meaders in second in the 130 lb. category; Kevin Spicer placed second in the 152 lb. category; Charles Smothers placed third in the 171 lb. category; and Tre’ Horton took fourth in the 125 lb. class.
For Horton, a freshman, it was his first medal of the season, and the first of his high school career.
“It was a tough tournament, yet again,” Powers said. “There were a lot of 5-A schools participating, including Benjamin Russell, who brought a tough squad with them.
“Our team is coming around, and we feel like we’ll be a little stronger after Christmas. We’re doing well right now.”
