Last Friday was a great night for the Commerce Lady Tigers, who recorded a 54-15 win over Tallulah Falls in a region match-up.
Picking up the first region win, and head coach Eddie McCurley’s 400th career win, provided the Commerce fans who made the trip north an exciting game.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead, going up 18-2 at the end of the first quarter. By the half, the lead was 32-8.
In the third quarter, Commerce put up an additional 18 points to four for Tallulah Falls, making the score 50-12.
Commerce coasted to a 54-15 victory for the first region win of the season.
Coach McCurley took advantage of the lead to give every player some court experience that could prove beneficial later in the season.
After facing the East Jackson Eagles (Wednesday), the Lady Tigers have a day to prepare before facing off against Jefferson Friday night.
“We have to play every game like it is our last game,” said McCurley. “It is the only way we can compete… I will emphasize that I like the way we are playing right now. I like what we are doing.”
Tip-off at Jefferson is at 7 p.m.
Following Friday’s game, the Lady Tigers are going to have to dig deep Saturday to find the energy to play for a win against Hebron.
“East Jackson and Jefferson are non-region games,” said McCurley. “You want to win them all, but the important one is Saturday against Hebron.”
In previous match-ups between the schools, Hebron has come out on top. So far this season, Hebron has only won once and opens its region play against Commerce. If Commerce can carry Saturday’s competition, it would set the team up nicely with two region wins under its belt before the holiday break.
Saturday’s game is at 6 p.m. in the CHS gym.
