It was a rough weekend for local racers who made the trek to Pensacola, Fla. to compete in the 41st annual Snowball Derby weekend at Five Flags Speedway.
In Sunday’s Snowball Derby, Pendergrass’ Paul Kelley was the highest finisher from our area. Kelley started 22nd, and finished 10th after being involved in a multi-car accident on lap 263 of the 300 lap race.
Jefferson’s Joey Senter finished 23rd, several laps down after being involved in a two car accident 22 laps into the event.

Local racers have rough outing at Snowball Derby
Former Jefferson resident Ryan Crane came into the event with high hopes, but had problems during the race. His woes started with a spin on lap 15 after he tangled with the car of Shane Sieg while racing for fifth. Crane was able to continue, but was involved in another accident on lap 72, along with Michigan racer Tim Curry. Crane was left with heavy damage to the right front of his car, and was eliminated from the event.
He was credited with a 37th place finish.
North Carolina racer Brian Ickler was flagged the winner of the prestigious event, but was disqualified in post-race tech for having an illegally placed electric brake blower. That gave the win to Alabama’s Augie Grill, his second Snowball Derby victory of his career. It also made Grill the second driver in history to win back-to-back events.
Things went a little better for local racers who took part in Saturday night’s Snowflake 100 Pro Late Model event at Five Flags. Ryan Crane, who won the event in 2007, held the lead with five laps remaining when Brandon Carlson made a late pass for the win. Crane would hold on for a second place finish.

Hoschton’s Jimmy Garmon finished 22nd after being caught up in a seven car accident on lap 54 that ended his night.
Commerce driver Taylor Satterfield had a rough night from the start after being caught up in a ten-car pile-up on the third lap.
Satterfield returned to the track, but would complete only 22 laps. He was credited with a 33rd place finish.
He was credited with a 37th place finish.
