Ethan Womack once again helped lead a Barrow County contingent at the boys state track meet in Jefferson last week.
The Winder-Barrow High School senior earned fifth in the shot put competition for Class AAAAA with a throw of 52-5.5.
Womack won first last spring, but noted the competition was much tougher in 2015. Apalachee High School’s Tyler Fragapane, who was runner-up in the event in 2014, returned to Jefferson this year but was unable to advance to the finals of the shot put throw after finishing 10th in the preliminaries. The top nine advanced to the finals and Fragapane’s throw of 49-11.5 was not quite enough.
Once again, WBHS had state qualifiers in the pole vault under the direction of long-time coach Cook Holliday, who noted before Thursday’s competition how far both Peter Bennett and Tucker Allen had advanced during a short time in the event.
Bennett earned fourth after clearing 12-6 on his first attempt while Allen was 12th after his top height of 11-6.
Andre Jackson represented WBHS in the long jump and his leap of 20-7.5 was good enough for 14th place.
