The Apalachee High School girls tennis team took a convincing 5-0 Region 8-AAAAA victory against Salem last week.
It was the first region win of 2015 for the Lady Wildcats.
“All of the girls played great and showed how being a smart, patient hitter is better than being a hard hitter,” said coach Jessica Hardy. The No. 1 doubles team of Bella Wilkins and Carsyn Flanigan won in three sets while the AHS No. 2 doubles pair of Katie Jackson and Kylie Turner won easily in two sets. Samantha Linatok and Sara Martinez, playing No. 1 and 2 singles, won in straight sets as well.
“Even though everyone deserves congratulations, the player of the match goes to Sara Wagler who won both sets in a tie breaker at No. 3 singles,” Hardy said. “She came back from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to come back and win 7-5 in the tiebreaker.”
The Lady Wildcats did fall to region foe Heritage 4-1 later in the week.
“Even though this was considered a loss, our No. 2 singles player, Sara Martinez, played her heart out through a shoulder injury,” Hardy said. “Our No. 1 singles player, Samantha Linatok, trampled her opponent in two straight sets, playing some of the best tennis we have seen from her so far.”
In addition, other 2015 team members, included Wagler at No. 3 Singles, Maddie Gordon and Kylie Turner at No. 1 doubles, and the No. 2 doubles team Charlotte Hawley and Carsyn Flanigan continue to improve, their coach said.
“Charlotte and Carsyn are first time tennis players and are showing some great promise out on the court,” Hardy said.
