Jefferson loses to Heritage to open tourney

“We were never really able to get over the hump and get a lead,” Gibson said. “They had a very good ball team. They were very athletic, and they applied a lot of pressure on the floor.”

Gibson said the turnovers that his team made were “silly.”

“A lot of them were in our transition game,” he said. “When we should have ended up with lay-ups, we had turnovers. We had some turnovers against our pressure, but it wasn’t just that that caused us to turn it over. We just made some silly mistakes.”

Regardless, Gibson said he felt Saturday’s game was a good experience for the younger players on the team. Four of those that played major minutes had never set foot on a varsity floor before, he said.

“Four of our top eight kids were pretty much making their first varsity appearance. It was a learning experience for them.”

Emily Jacobs led Jefferson in scoring with 11, Marcayla Hester and Callie Holloway both had 8.

Gibson says while things might not have started out very well Saturday, he’s looking at the big picture.

“Our record may not look very good before we start region play, but in the long run, I think our kids will be better for it, because we’ll have played some very good competition.”

Following the tournament, the Lady Dragons will start their regular season on Dec. 5 with a trip to Hart County.
