The three-time state champion Madison County All-Star senior girls softball team will open Regional Tournament play Saturday at 2:30 p.m. versus North Carolina in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Madison County is coming off a state tournament sweep in their own backyard in Danielsville a week ago. Madison County defeated Macon 19-0 in game one and defeated Northern of Columbus in game two 13-10.
Game two proved to be the most exciting game for Madison County. After jumping out to an 8-0 lead early in the game, Northern took advantage of nine Madison County errors to jump ahead late 10-8. Madison County scored five runs in the sixth and held on to win.
Madison then claimed their third consecutive state title the next day defeating the same Northern team 6-1 sending them back to the Regionals in Florida and a shot at a trip to the World Series.
“The girls truly love playing little league and are great inspirations to younger players as well as us coaches,” said Coach Rodney Rogers.
The hard work of winning a state title goes far beyond what happens in tournament play. Rogers made sure his girls were ready to defend their state title with hard work at practices.
“We had four-hour practices and we went over and over plays to make sure we covered all aspects of the game,” said Rogers. “We tell the girls to always leave it all on the field, everything you have, so you will have no regrets. Be willing to work on what you are bad at because it’s easy to work on what you’re good at and just be honest with yourself and admit you need to work on certain parts of your game.”
Rogers and his girls set sail on Saturday in the Southeast Regional Tournament in Ft. Myers with hopes that a third-straight trip to Florida will be a charm that gets them their first ever trip to the Little League World Series.
Madison County is placed in Pool “B” with the host team and North Carolina. Pool “A” will consist of Florida, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Following Madison County’s opener with North Carolina July 26, they will have the day off on Sunday and will resume play on Monday versus the host site team at 3 p.m.
