JEFFERSON’S boys’ golf team is ready to make the most of its first state tournament trip in eight years.
The Dragons play Monday at Applewood Golf Club.
“This is the boys’ first trip to the event since 2006, so we’re really excited to have a chance to compete in the state championship,” coach Tom Parker said.
Based on results from both region and sectional tournaments around the state, Jefferson likely enters the tournament as one of the 10 best teams in the state. Their hope is to finish in the top five, according to Parker.
The team has now had four weeks off to prepare for state since winning the region title back in April — its first championship since 1985.
“The boys have had a the opportunity to play a lot of golf these past several weeks with much better weather than we endured through a lot of the season,” Parker said.
The coach praised the play of Cooper Young, who he feels has really found his niche with golf, as well as Charlie Jarrett, who Parker said has settled into a comfortable swing.
The boys’ team played a practice round at Applewood in April, which Parker hopes bodes well for Monday.
“The players seemed very comfortable with the course and its layout,” Parker said. “Several of them were able to make connections to shots needed to those they use at Double Oaks Golf Course.”
