Five Banks County High School track and field athletes qualified for the AAA East Sectionals after earning top-four finishes at the Region 7-AAA meet last week in Dawson County.
Makayla Hewell led the Lady Leopards to a sixth-place overall finish as she finished third in the girls’ 3200-meter run (12:12:59) and second in the 1600-meter run (5:33.17). Hewell qualified for sectionals in both events and is the sole Lady Leopard that will travel to East Jackson on Saturday.
The Banks County boys finished fourth out of the eight teams in Region 7-AAA and qualified for sectionals in six events.
Will Ledford finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.66) and second in the long jump event (20-03.5). Zack Walker finished third and also qualified for sectionals in the long jump (20-03.5). Andrew Elliott finished third in the 1600-meter run (4:42.46) and third in the 800-meter run (2:04.83). Beau Rush took fourth in the 800-meter run (2:05.62), earning a spot in the AAA East Sectionals.
“We are very proud of our entire boys and girls track teams this year,” said Leopard coach Josh Shoemaker. “Both teams competed at every event we placed them in. They did an awesome job of representing Banks County everywhere that we went. All of our athletes worked hard this year and we are excited for our Sectional qualifiers.“
All sectional qualifiers will compete at East Jackson on Saturday. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m., while running events kickoff at 3:30 p.m. The top eight finishers in each event will qualify for the boys’ or girls’ state meet.
