Corey Brakhage made his first region meet a memorable one.
The Raider freshman ran a 19:37 to lead Madison County and finish 34th out of 70 varsity runners overall at Saturday’s 8-AAAA meet in Conyers.
Heritage ended up winning the region with a team score of 22, easily defeating second-place Habersham Central (75).
Madison County finished last out of nine teams competing at region with 235 points.
Other Raider runners scoring at the region meet were Scott Barnes (48th, 20:40), Jacob Collins (49th, 20:41), Chris Dove (59th, 21:49) and Marcus Bowen (60th, 21:58). Also competing were Dalton Owensby (62nd, 22:07) and Red Painter (64th, 23:12).
Madison County’s top five runners finished the course in an average of 20:57.
Elisha Nichols ran a strong race in the junior varsity ranks, finishing 16th out of 65 with a time of 21:15. Drew Cofer (45th, 23:48) and Levi Owensby (46th, 23:52) also competed, but the Raiders didn’t have enough runners to qualify for a junior varsity team score.
Tricia Ebalobo was the lone Madison County runner to compete in the girls’ region race.
She finished 58th with a time of 29:37.
