East Jackson holds off Dawson for win

A touchdown pass from Evan Williamson to Cody Gibbs with four minutes left on the clock boosted the East Jackson Eagles ahead of Dawson County Friday night, giving the Eagles their third region victory of the year.

But with the celebration now behind them, East Jackson has to face the 8-AA region champs, the Jefferson Dragons, to round out their season Friday night.

Only the most ardent of Eagle believers are expecting victory number four for East Jackson to come from this pairing. However, it could prove a very good chance for the young team to learn from a team that has gone undefeated this year and is one of the favorites going into the post season.

On paper, the differences are pretty vast. The Dragons have scored 338 total points this season, an average of 37.6 per game, while the Eagles have scored 143, an average of 15.9 per game. East Jackson has allowed 220 points to be scored against them, an average of 24.4 per game, while the Dragons have allowed about half that, 112 total for a 12.4 per game average.

But with the Dragons sure to be looking ahead at the big picture, and with the region title sewed up with their win Friday against North Oconee, Jefferson could choose a conservative path, looking at the playoff picture rather than a potential in-county rivalry. If they do take that path, that could open the door for East Jackson to pull off a huge upset on Friday night.

Stranger things have happened in football.

Kickoff in Nicholson Friday night is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
