Panthers close season by hosting Stephens Co. Friday

The Jackson County Panthers were hoping to make a recent losing streak by the Oconee County Warriors work in their favor by extending their misery to four.

It wasn’t meant to be, however, as the Warriors used their match-up with the Panthers to turn their fortunes around, winning 44-17.

There’s no time for the Panthers to worry about yesterday, however. Their season finale is their last chance to try to pick up what’s proven to be an elusive region victory, their first since 2006. That last shot will come at home Friday against the Indians of Stephens County.

It will take the Panthers pulling a rabbit out of the hat against a strong Stephens County.

The Indians are currently in a three-way tie for first in the region, along with Eastside and Hart County. They are 5-1 in the region, and 7-2 overall.

On paper, it doesn’t get any prettier for Jackson County. While the Panthers have scored 88 points all year, an average of 9.8 per game, the Indians have scored 212 total, and average of 23.6 per game.

Jackson County has allowed 246 points to be run up against them, an average of 27.3 per game, while Stephens County has allowed less than half that, a 143 total for an average of 15.9 per game.

Stephens County crushed the Panthers in their most recent match-up, winning 34-3 back in November of 2001.

Kickoff Friday night is scheduled for 7:30 p.m
