Jackson County’s Chuckie Allen notched a fourth-place finish in the 170-lb. class in the Class AAA state tournament in Buford Saturday.
Allen, a sophomore, advanced to the consolation finals where he lost to Rockmart’s Marlon Morales. Allen, who went 2-2 on the day, finished the year at 47-12.
“I am really pleased with how Chuckie progressed throughout the year,” Jackson County coach Jason Powers said. “He is a very confident wrestler and that paid off with a state medal. Chuckie is only a sophomore. This puts him on track for some great things in his future.”
Allen won his quarterfinals match via a pin in the third period against Wyatt Shepard from Ringgold but lost to eventual state champion Demarko Dixon in the semifinals.
“I was extremely pleased with his performance in this match,” Powers said. “He wrestled tough and never backed off. He made him earn the win and that’s all you can ask for.”
Allen won in overtime in the consolation semifinals against St. Pius’s Jack Marsh before losing to Morales in the consolation finals.
The only other Jackson County wrestler to advance to state was junior Zak Evans at 152. Evans lost to the eventual state champion from Woodward Academy — Chandler Pike — in the quarterfinals and then fell in the consolation quarterfinals to McNair’s Jamal Deng.
“Zak made a good run at the podium with a great post season,” Powers said. “He really peaked at the right time again this year but came up just short at the state tournament.”
Jackson County finished 25th in Class AA with 13 points. Buford won the team title with 156 points. Banks County was second with 101 points.
