THE JEFFERSON High School and middle school swim teams recently competed at the Indian Invitational at the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center in Gainesville.
The meet hosted 18 teams and over 500 swimmers from around the state.
The Jefferson teams of nine girls and five boys finished in the top ten in their respective divisions at the event, which has an average team size of 27. The Jefferson girls finished fifth (141.5 points), while the boys finished seventh (178.5 points).
The Jefferson girls’ 200-yard medley relay team finished fourth out of 30 teams, while the girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay team finished seventh out of 41 teams.
Jacob Musgrove was the Dragons’ top individual finisher as he placed sixth in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle. Camille Porter finished ninth in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle.
“We didn’t have as many time drops as we normally have this time of the season but I think it was due to the long break we had and the way the holidays fell this year” said Dragon head coach Lane Guzman. “Some swimmers did have a great meet though – particularly Caroline Mitchell, Max Higgins, Avery Mixon and Lilli Blackstock. Those swimmers worked the hardest over the break and you could tell.”
This weekend will be a busy one for the Dragon swim team. The high school team will travel to Dalton for the Northeast Georgia Regional Meet on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, the middle school team will compete in a meet in Habersham County.
Following this weekend’s meets, swimmers will have a one more week of practice before the final regular season meet and their final chance to qualify for the state swim meet on Feb. 7-8.
