LAST SATURDAY, the Jefferson High School swim team competed in a meet at the University of Georgia’s Ramsey Center.
Out of the 13 schools competing at the event, the Jefferson girls’ finished fourth overall, while the Jefferson boys finished tenth.
Dragon head coach Lane Guzman noted that he was impressed by the time drops of his team at the meet which hosted a “high level of competition.”
“I think everyone of our swimmers improved in at least one event and we really swam great top to bottom,” said Guzman.
The Lady Dragon 4x100 freestyle relay team of Camille Porter, Bree Hanson, Ryan Childress and Heather Perry qualified for the state swim meet and earned a fourth place finish.
Perry placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Hanson (third) and Childress (fourth) both swam their best times of the season in the 50-yard freestyle.
In the boys’ events, Jefferson had three top ten finishers in the 500-yard freestyle. Jacob Musgrove placed third, Nic Aquila placed sixth and Cole Holbrook placed seventh. Musgrove qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row with his freestyle time.
So far, the Dragons have qualified three relay teams and two individuals (Porter and Musgrove) for state competition.
“Our team only has one senior and three juniors so we are building” said Guzman, “But I think everyone is really excited about the program and where we are headed.”
The team will be practicing during the holiday break to gear up for the busy January slate of meets which lead to the state finals in February. The swim Dragons will resume competition on Jan. 11 at the Frances Meadows Center in Gainesville.
