The Commerce High School basketball team got its first win of the season last Friday after knocking off Oglethorpe County 47-42 on the road.
The Tigers got out to a fast start and never looked back as they led the Patriots 30-18 at halftime. Oglethorpe County went on a third-period points run, but eventually fell short as the Tigers held onto the lead through the end of the fourth period.
Sophomore J’Varius led the Tiger scoring effort with 14 points. Wood also added four rebounds, six steals and three assists.
Chandler Rodgers and K.J. Jones each contributed 10 points.
Last Tuesday, the Tigers dropped their season opener to East Jackson, 53-46.
Commerce junior Kirk Vaughn posted a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tigers opened region play on Tuesday when they traveled to Lakeview Academy, but details were unavailable at press time.
On Friday, Commerce hosts Tallulah Falls for a Region 8-A matchup at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers then travel to Jefferson on Saturday for a rivalry bout with the Dragons at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Tigers improved their record to 1-1 on Friday as Commerce defeated Oglethorpe County 51-39 on the road.
The score was tight until after the half when the Lady Tigers went on a scoring run that eventually equated to 20 third-period points.
Senior Hannah Davis had a career-best performance, posting a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also tallied six assists.
Senior Hannah McRee scored 10 points, while junior Lexi Knox added 12.
Last week, the Lady Tigers fell 42-30 in their season opener against East Jackson.
McRee led the Tiger scoring effort with eight points. Senior Lily Mather tallied 12 rebounds, three assists, seven steals and five deflections.
