Madison County’s wrestling team rode home with a third-place trophy from the Union County Tournament Saturday.
“It was good for our guys, a good learning experience,” said Red Raider head coach Ritchie Houston, whose team finished behind Clarke Central and Flowery Branch in the 10-team field. “It wasn’t a real tough tournament, but it was a good way to start the year with a positive.”
Seven Raider wrestlers placed first or second in the tournament. Those finishing first included Cody Bond, 106 lbs.; Evan Drake, 113 lbs.; and Eric Smith, 160 lbs. Those finishing second were Dylan Gaddis, 120 lbs.; Justin Bishop, 126 lbs.; Josiah Jachinski, 138 lbs.; and Jordan Wiley, 182 lbs.
Saturday’s action followed a Tuesday three-team matchup at Banks County. The Raiders fell to the home Leopards, winning just four individual matches, and also dropped a close matchup to Clarke Central, winning six to the Gladiators’ eight victories.
Bond and Drake, both freshmen, were undefeated for the week, going 5-0.
Houston said his team is opening with some tough dual meets. The squad was scheduled to host Morgan County, who finished fourth in Class AAA last year, in “the Barn” in Danielsville Tuesday.
The next week will be busy for Madison County wrestlers.
The varsity wrestlers will host Oconee County Tuesday, Dec. 3, in “the Barn.” The Warriors finished fifth in Class AAA last year. The junior varsity Raiders will travel to Stephens County Tuesday for a four-team dual and both varsity and junior varsity wrestlers will travel to Walnut Grove Friday for a four-team dual. Varsity wrestlers will then travel to Oglethorpe County for the Patriot Classic Saturday, Dec. 6.
