The Jefferson Dragons Cross Country team turned in another strong performance last week at the MainStreet Invitational at East Jackson. The girls came out on top, besting East Jackson, Jackson County and Banks County.
Madison County and Commerce competed, but did not have enough runners to score.
Meanwhile the boys finished fourth, behind East Jackson, Banks and Jackson County. Madison County and Commerce finished behind the Dragons.
The team has continued this week to prepare for the region meet, which is scheduled for Saturday at Riverside Military Academy.
“Hundreds of miles over the summer and early morning practices have certainly paid off and our runners have posted personal best performances week after week,” said coach Charles Elfer. “On the girl’s side, Coach Barefoot is optimistic about Jefferson’s ability to win region, despite the absence of lead runner Kaylee Lopez.
“Coach Barefoot has done an excellent job working with the girls and the squad is indeed deep.” Jefferson’s girl’s varsity will compete Saturday at 12:45 p.m.
“On the boy’s side, we face an equally great challenge in our new AA Region,” Elfer said. “The competition for the state qualifying spots will be fierce.
“The boys are finally healthy and eager to return to the state championships in Carrollton.”
The varsity boys will compete at noon.
