DRAGON head coach Ben Hall noted that the thing that stood out the most in Jefferson’s scrimmage victory over Morgan County last week was that his team “played hard, played with lots of enthusiasm and tried to do what they were asked to do to the best of their ability.”
The Dragons were up on Morgan County 40-10 after three quarters before the junior varsity squads got the chance to gain some on-field experience.
While Hall said that there were some mental mistakes made, they were expected this early in the season.
“The intensity they played with was pretty impressive,” Hall said.
First year quarterback Evan Shirreffs had a solid night, completing 11 of 13 passes for over 200 yards. Dalton Hill, Chandler Thompson, Donnie Hatfield and T.J. Skelton were all on the receiving end of touchdown passes.
Hall noted a solid performance by backs and the offensive line. He also praised the enthusiasm of the Dragon defense.
“Defensively, I thought we played great,” Hall said. “We flew to the ball and got after it.”
The Dragons will now turn their attention onto Commerce. Jefferson will seek revenge after suffering its lone loss last season at the hands of the Tigers. The rivals will clash for their season openers on Aug. 30, at Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
