LAST WEEKEND, Georgia Multisports Productions held its fourth annual Crow’s Lake Sprint Triathlon in Jefferson.
Approxiamately 300 athletes were on hand to swim 400 yards, bike 15.5 miles and run 3.1 miles (5K).
The overall male winner was Zachary Pitts, 37, of Avondale Estates. Pitts posted a time of 1:09:01. The overall female winner was Kalen Scholz, 26, of Athens, with a time of 1:19:50.
The athletes swam a clockwise shaped course at Crow’s Lake, which also doubles as a slalom water ski course. They biked along Highway 11 heading away from Jefferson, made a left turn on Hancock Bridge Road, turned right on WH Hays Road, then turned left on Galilee Church Road before returning to Crow’s Lake via Highway 11. The athletes then ran muddy one-loop course around the different lakes before reaching the finish line.
Athletes ages ranged from 13 to 73, with the oldest competitor being Atlanta native Duane Solem, 73.
“Thanks to the wonderful volunteers, many of who were at the race site at 5:45 a.m, the race was a success,” said race director Lee Elrod. “This was in spite of the rainfall that fell during the race on Sunday, the heavy rain that came off and on during setup on Saturday, and all the rain we have received the past month which turned our nice, scenic trail run into a battle against mud and wet grass. The race staff received a tremendous amount of assistance from Tom Crow as well as the Jackson County and Barrow County’s Sheriff’s Department.”
The race was sponsored by Muscle Milk, a protein enhanced drink and Oberto all natural beef jerky. The race was timed by On-Time Results. The event was one of 18 triathlons produced by Georgia MultiSports.
